The First Complaint

The First Complaint A Neighbor's Anger J. A. Harrison confronts Anne Shirley after his oats are trampled by a Jersey cow. Anne apologizes but also points out that his fence is in poor repair. A Promise Made Sensitive about her hair and stung by his insults, Anne answers sharply before restoring her composure. She promises the cow will not enter his oats again, not knowing how fragile that promise is.

The Cow in the Oats Again

The Cow in the Oats Again A Hasty Rescue Anne and Diana Barry find a Jersey in Harrison's field and chase it through the wet oats. Exhausted and embarrassed, Anne accepts an offer to sell the animal to Mr. Shearer. The Wrong Cow Only afterward does Anne discover that she sold Harrison's cow, not her own. Her promise to prevent further damage has become a much larger breach of responsibility.

Confession at Harrison's

Confession at Harrison's Owning the Mistake Anne walks to Harrison's house with the sale money and a cake, prepared to face his anger. Ginger's insult initially compounds her embarrassment, but she persists in explaining what happened. Forgiveness and Exchange Harrison accepts Anne's cow in exchange and refuses to treat the accident as a catastrophe. Their honest conversation replaces hostility with neighborly warmth.

A Neighborly Friendship

A Neighborly Friendship Regular Visits Anne visits Harrison, and their conversations reveal a lonely man beneath his blunt manner. He appreciates her company even though he rarely praises her directly. Affection Through Allowance Anne learns to tolerate his teasing, while he begins to take an interest in her plans. Their friendship grows from mutual honesty rather than from either person's polished manners.

A New Household

A New Household A Surprise Arrival Emily Harrison arrives in Avonlea, revealing that Harrison has a wife from whom he has been separated. Local gossip rushes to judgment before the couple's history is known. A Changed Neighbor Harrison explains their quarrel and acknowledges his own stubbornness; Emily also admits she expected too much. The marriage resumes, and Anne sees her neighbor settle into a more sociable life.
