Friday Visitor Rule at Patty’s Place
Anne of the IslandThe Friday Visitor Rule at Patty’s Place restricts the household’s visiting hours to Friday evenings. It is both a practical condition of Philippa Gordon joining the shared home and a boundary she welcomes: the rule gives shape to social life while relieving her of the responsibility of enforcing it alone.
The Rule and Its Purpose
Priscilla Grant explains that Philippa, as everyone at Redmond College knows, entertains callers almost every evening. That pattern is incompatible with life at Patty’s Place, so Anne Shirley and Priscilla have decided that the household will receive friends only on Friday evenings. If Philippa joins them, she must abide by the arrangement.
Philippa’s Response
Philippa accepts the restriction with relief rather than resentment. She says she had expected to need a rule of this kind but lacked the resolve to make one or stick to it; sharing responsibility with Anne and Priscilla would therefore be a real relief. Her response makes the rule more than a limit on callers: it is a piece of household structure she wants but has not been able to establish for herself.
The Rule as a Condition of Welcome
Anne does not promise Philippa a place immediately, explaining that she and Priscilla must first consult Stella Maynard. Still, Anne says that, as far as the two of them are concerned, Philippa is welcome, and Priscilla adds that she may leave if she tires of their simple life. The Friday restriction is thus presented as a clear condition within a broader invitation to share the household. Philippa responds jubilantly, hugging both women before leaving.
