Pink enamel heart pendant

Anne of the Island

The Pink enamel heart pendant is a small gift from Gilbert Blythe to Anne Shirley whose meaning changes when she wears it on graduation night. First associated with an old school joke and a courteous thank-you, it becomes an outwardly quiet sign of Anne’s hopes—and, when its chain breaks, of the hurt she tries to conceal.

The Gift and Its History

The pendant arrived at Green Gables on Christmas day in a small box. It hung from a thread-like gold chain, and the accompanying card read, “With all good wishes from your old chum, Gilbert.” Its pink heart recalled the day Gilbert had called Anne “Carrots” and tried to make peace with her using a pink candy heart. Anne had written him a pleasant note of thanks, but had never worn the gift.

Worn at Graduation

On the night of the Arts graduates’ dance, Anne set aside the pearl beads she usually wore and took the pendant from her trunk. She fastened it around her white throat with a dreamy smile. The choice gave the old gift a new place in the present: Gilbert’s flowers had already seemed to belong to the shared hopes of their youth, and now his pendant joined the occasion Anne had long imagined reaching.

The Broken Chain

Walking to Redmond with Phil, Anne heard that Gilbert’s engagement to Christine Stuart might be announced after Convocation. Anne did not answer. In the darkness, her face burned; she slipped a hand inside her collar, caught the gold chain, and broke it with one forceful twist. She put the broken trinket in her pocket, her hands trembling and her eyes smarting.

The gesture is the pendant’s decisive turn in the story. Anne had chosen to wear Gilbert’s gift, but the rumor immediately made that private sign of attachment painful. She concealed the broken trinket and, at the dance, told Gilbert without regret that her card was full when he asked her to dance. The pendant thus links a childhood reconciliation to an adult disappointment, while its sudden break gives material form to a feeling Anne does not voice.
