Spring
Anxious PeopleSpring is the season of return in the novel: it breaks winter’s silence and provides the present-day frame for Jack’s arrival at Nadia’s office, a reunion shaped by a decade of memory and by moments that seem to repeat themselves.
Winter’s End and Spring’s Return
Spring arrives after a winter in which snow has swallowed every echo. Wind sweeps the season away; trees rustle and birds grow noisy, until nature returns with a roar. The change is more than a shift in weather: the movement from muffled quiet to renewed sound gives the narrative a sense of life resuming after a long suspension.
A Letter and an Arrival
Against this seasonal renewal, Jack steps out of an elevator bewildered and curious, holding a letter that had appeared on his doormat without a stamp. It directs him to a specific building, floor, and office, and contains a photograph of The bridge as well as a second, sealed envelope bearing another name. Spring thus frames a journey prompted not by an ordinary appointment but by an unexplained message and an image tied to the past.
Ten Years Between the Bridge and the Office
At the office, Jack encounters Nadia for the first time in ten years. He last saw her standing on the railing of The bridge, and the memory remains so vivid that he would recognize her even in darkness. Nadia opens the door without knowing who he is and greets him with friendly bemusement; Jack can only stammer. The contrast between his instant recognition and her uncertainty makes the reunion’s emotional weight unevenly visible: for him, the past has remained present, while for her, this meeting begins without that knowledge.
Seasonal Return and Repeated Time
Spring’s recurring arrival resonates with the novel’s suggestion that the past does not simply disappear. Zara recognizes Jack at the police station despite the years that have passed, and realizes that he, like her, has been living those moments over again. Set beside the ten-year interval separating the bridge from Nadia’s office, this recognition complicates the apparent forward movement of time: seasons return, memories recur, and a new encounter can reopen an old moment.
