Across the Channel

Across the Channel
The first links
Fogg and Passepartout travel by rail through Paris and Turin to Brindisi. The carefully chained departures put Fogg’s abstract route into practice.
A recorded journey
Fogg notes arrivals and departures in his itinerary. The record lets him compare actual progress with the schedule rather than relying on impressions.
The Eastern Passage

The Eastern Passage
Steam across the Red Sea
The Mongolia carries Fogg from Suez through the Red Sea and on to Bombay. Its early arrival gives him two days of valuable margin.
Rail and interruption
The Great Indian Peninsula Railway carries the party into India, but the unfinished section forces an elephant crossing. The route becomes a mixture of modern infrastructure and improvised transport.
The China Sea Detour

The China Sea Detour
Eastward by steamer
From Calcutta, the Rangoon takes Fogg, Aouda, and Fix toward Hong Kong. Weather slows the vessel and puts the scheduled connection at risk.
A private craft to Shanghai
After the Carnatic leaves early, Fogg charters the Tankadere and sails through a typhoon toward Shanghai. The risky detour brings him to the General Grant and restores the journey’s forward momentum.
Across the Pacific

Across the Pacific
A reunited party
Fogg finds Passepartout in Yokohama and boards the General Grant for San Francisco. The reunion restores the original traveling party after the Hong Kong separation.
A long ocean crossing
The Pacific passage is comparatively calm, allowing Fogg to regain confidence in the remaining schedule. The journey has crossed much of the globe, but the American rail crossing still lies ahead.
The Return to London

The Return to London
Rail across America
The party crosses the United States by rail, then uses a sail sledge to recover time after the Sioux attack. In New York, a missed steamer forces Fogg to find a different Atlantic passage.
The final approach
The Henrietta reaches Ireland, where Fogg switches to the mail route through Dublin and Liverpool. Arrest briefly interrupts the last leg, but he eventually reaches London in time for the true deadline.
