Nick’s Protection

An Informal Network
A Safe Loft
Nick receives Edgar after the escape and provides him with a place to work and sleep. The artists’ connections give Edgar shelter beyond the reach of the hospital and police.
Stella’s Introduction
Nick brings Stella from Victoria Station to the loft, making him an intermediary in the lovers’ clandestine life. His loyalty is practical as well as emotional, though his own attachment to Stella complicates the arrangement.
A Community of Artists

Shelter and Creative Work
Visitors in the Loft
Other artists visit Edgar and Nick, treating Edgar’s fugitive status as one fact among many. Their presence reduces Stella’s isolation at first and gives the loft an appearance of community.
Creative Recovery
Edgar resumes drawing and sculpting, using Stella as his model. Artistic work gives him temporary structure, but it does not prevent his paranoia from returning or make the refuge materially secure.
Nick’s Last Refuge

Shelter After Violence
A Dangerous Visit
After Stella leaves Edgar, she reaches Nick’s flat. Edgar finds the address and arrives at the door, using accusation and menace to try to regain control.
Flight Together
Nick and Stella leave the flat before Edgar can return, moving to temporary lodging. Nick’s protection buys her time, but neither his loyalty nor the artists’ network can provide lasting safety from Edgar or the authorities.
