Jealousy in the Loft

The Fugitive Idyll Frays
Suspicion Returns
Edgar becomes increasingly jealous and interprets Stella’s closeness with Nick as evidence of betrayal. His accusations echo the delusions that preceded the murder of Ruth Stark.
Violence Reappears
Edgar attacks Stella during a breakdown and turns his work on Stella’s clay head into an unsettling record of their damaged intimacy. The refuge no longer protects her from the illness she had romanticized.
Flight from the Loft

Leaving the Hideout
Seeking Safety
Stella escapes the loft and finds Nick. Edgar later comes to Nick’s home looking for her, and his altered voice and threatening presence convince them that remaining there is unsafe.
A Second Displacement
Stella and Nick flee together, moving through temporary lodging while Stella tries to separate Edgar from his illness. Her resolve to return to him persists even as fear and exhaustion undermine it.
The Capture and Return

Two Paths Close
Stella Found
Stella returns to Horsey Street and is taken into police custody. Max arrives, and the authorities treat her as a manipulated partner rather than immediately pursuing charges against her.
Edgar Recaptured
Edgar is eventually arrested in Chester while trying to reach Stella. Both lovers return to institutional custody, but Stella’s emotional attachment has not ended simply because their fugitive life has.
