The Ambitious Administrator

A Career in View
Deputy Superintendent
Max arrives at the hospital hoping to build a future in administration. He restores parts of the estate and appears to imagine himself eventually succeeding Jack Straffen.
Private Limitations
Peter considers Max competent but weak, while Stella sees him as emotionally unimaginative. His ambitions provide direction, but his reserve leaves little room for understanding the crisis unfolding in his marriage.
A Career Reduced

Professional Displacement
Dismissal
The hospital removes Max after the scandal makes his presence a liability. He moves to a staff position in Cledwyn, carrying disappointment and resentment into a smaller professional world.
Withdrawal at Home
His relationships with Stella and Charlie deteriorate, and the household becomes a place of silence and accusation. Max’s efforts to maintain moral authority do not restore the career or family life he has lost.
A Man Defined by Loss

Grief Turns Inward
Photographs at Plas Mold
Peter finds Max living among photographs of Charlie and no visible photograph of Stella. Max’s grief has narrowed his world and stripped away much of his former energy.
Resignation
Max warns Peter about Stella but ultimately blesses his plan to care for her. His own punitive tendencies have turned inward, and Peter sees him as a man slowly putting himself to death.
