CHECKMATE
Awakening the Angel System: Apocalypse: A LitRPG Progression FantasyCHECKMATE is the autonomous organization tasked with hunting the High Table, and its importance lies in the way it turns scattered suspicion into a worldwide system of surveillance, records, training, and force. Under Director Alan York, it operates with special autonomy from Selfia while remaining connected to the royal power that authorizes and supports it. The organization is therefore more than a conventional security service: it is the machinery through which a threatened kingdom tries to make an invisible enemy legible, trackable, and ultimately destroyable.
Mandate and Institutional Position
CHECKMATE’s immediate objective is to identify and dismantle the High Table’s operations. When Jack demands concrete results after two weeks of confinement, Leona explains that CHECKMATE is monitoring three apple-producing companies—Honey Rite, ApplesRUS, and Applee—which serve different regions and originate in three Theocratic cities but converge in Neo-Chicago. Agents are watching the companies’ trucks, recording their routes and schedules, and attempting to compile lists of personnel and machinery that could lead investigators to potential High Table facilities. The work is deliberately incremental: the organization must establish movement patterns and logistical links before it can strike the larger network.
The scale of that assignment exceeds ordinary policing. Jack’s files describe the High Table as an organization spread across the world, possessing the power of an army and the support of nations. CHECKMATE’s existence reflects that imbalance. It has been fighting a conflict in which information is as decisive as firepower, yet its successes remain limited. Selfia has killed only three High Table pawns in nearly four years, while Jack has personally brought down one. The organization’s autonomy is consequently not a sign of easy authority; it is a concession to the magnitude of the enemy and to the need for operations that can proceed beyond routine royal channels.
Director Alan York and Organizational History
Alan York leads CHECKMATE as its Director. His career began as a sergeant aboard a landship before he became an aide to the Bell family. A chance encounter involving Jill placed him in the family’s service, but that encounter had a devastating cost: York’s daughter was permanently scarred, confined to life-support machinery, and able to do little beyond remotely piloting MECHFrames. His leadership of CHECKMATE is consequently presented as the work of a man pursuing a mission shaped by personal damage as well as institutional duty. The narrative places York beside Jack as “A man on a mission,” then sharpens the comparison by describing Jack in the same terms.
York’s organization is built to preserve and exploit information. Selfia’s files on the High Table contain extensive profiles for every identified key player, including skills, activities, sightings, blood types, ingested foods, and speech patterns. The files are arranged through expandable entries, turning individual enemies into searchable patterns of behavior. CHECKMATE’s archive is not merely a record of past battles; it is an operational model that attempts to predict where people will appear, what they can do, and how their identities connect to the wider organization.
Agents, Training, and Field Operations
CHECKMATE agents are trained for combat as well as investigation. Leona states that every agent undergoes Special Tactics and Rescue training, and personnel connected with Gamma Station have also completed SERE, OCDTS, and STARs training. Nearly everyone from Gamma Station serves on Jack’s protection detail, although Elena is absent on maternity leave and has been replaced by an operative from the Saber Team. This detail shows CHECKMATE functioning simultaneously as an intelligence service, a tactical force, and a protective apparatus around the newly crowned king.
Its field operations are dangerous and often end in failure. Body-camera footage records Python and roughly a dozen other Awakened fighting Pawn number 5, Cobalt Claw. Cobalt Claw forms distinctive luna-energy claws and tears through CHECKMATE agents before Python kills him by strangling him with vines. The video sequence is not a triumphant report: it preserves the violence of the engagement, the agents’ vulnerability, and the fact that victory arrives only after severe losses. Many of the organization’s combat files were recovered from corpses, and very few conclude with success for CHECKMATE agents.
The organization also prepares for disruption through controlled visibility and communication. Because tablets can be hacked and Intellipads compromised, Jack encounters sensitive material printed on paper, which is considered secure so long as it remains hidden from inquisitive observers. The contrast between networked devices and physical documents defines CHECKMATE’s practical intelligence culture: it uses advanced systems, but it does not mistake technology for absolute protection. Information must still be guarded by people, and every channel can become a vulnerability.
Surveillance, Protection, and Royal Power
CHECKMATE’s activities are embedded in Jack’s public and private life. While he is confined to his luxurious room after marrying Selfia and being crowned king, Leona continues to brief him on the investigation. His confinement makes him effectively a prisoner, with visitors restricted to Kamila bringing food, Ada, and scheduled time with Leona and Celeste. CHECKMATE’s work continues outside that room, but its intelligence is also what gives Jack a way to act while he is denied physical freedom. The organization converts waiting into preparation, even as Jack experiences that delay as suffocation.
Once Jack begins making public appearances, CHECKMATE becomes part of the security architecture surrounding the crown. He travels in an armored limousine built from Armytheum to cancel mana attacks, with reactive armor over a carbon-fiber titanium-alloy shell and hidden weapons distributed throughout the vehicle. The car is too heavy for a MECHFrame to lift and is said to withstand anything short of an Anti-Army skill. Jack sits inside while Yun and Jenna avoid looking at Queen Selfia, and his Intellipad lists a tightly programmed day of royal appearances: the opening of the First Public Academy, Celeste’s reveal, a museum opening, a meeting with investors, and a visit to El Gato Negro. The security apparatus turns public kingship into a managed itinerary, protecting the monarch while also regulating his movement and exposure.
CHECKMATE’s relation to Selfia is cooperative but not simple. As a condition of Jack’s continued support, Selfia gives him her files on the High Table and permits access to CHECKMATE’s data, as well as to Director York’s information on the group. Her claim that she has provided everything remains qualified by the phrase “or so she claimed,” preserving an atmosphere of incomplete disclosure. The organization therefore stands between royal authority and Jack’s demand for truth: it is authorized by the crown, but its records become a bargaining instrument in the political relationship among Selfia, Jack, and the investigators.
Narrative and Political Significance
CHECKMATE embodies a recurring tension between action and waiting. Leona assures Jack that the organization is operating around the clock and that agents are already in the field, yet she asks him to cherish the peace for as long as it lasts. The phrase makes peace sound provisional rather than secure. CHECKMATE’s constant surveillance does not eliminate danger; it measures the interval before danger becomes visible enough to confront. Its work produces the possibility of action, but the evidence catalog repeatedly emphasizes delay, incomplete information, and the narrow margin separating intelligence from helplessness.
The organization also reveals how power operates through observation. Trucks are tracked, companies are monitored, personnel are catalogued, speech patterns are analyzed, and combat is reconstructed through body-camera footage. Even Jack’s movements are organized through security teams, armored transport, and daily prompts on an Intellipad. CHECKMATE protects bodies by making them visible to an institution, but that same visibility subjects people to classification and control. The organization’s distinctive strength is thus inseparable from its burden: it can confront a global enemy only by building its own extensive system of watching, recording, sorting, and anticipating.
For Jack, CHECKMATE is both an ally and a mirror. He studies its files, recognizes the scale of the force arrayed against him, and sees in York another figure defined by a mission. Yet Jack’s later movement through the city—surrounded by security, a child, a chauffeur, and scattered last wills and testaments—leaves him hollow rather than fulfilled. CHECKMATE can supply protection, intelligence, and operational reach, but it cannot restore the guilt and remorse that have disappeared from him or answer the dread attached to his altered condition. Its role in the story is therefore double: it is the practical instrument of resistance against the High Table, and it is the institutional environment that exposes how surveillance and mission-driven power can preserve a kingdom without making its central figure whole.
