High Table Pawns

Awakening the Angel System: Apocalypse: A LitRPG Progression Fantasy

High Table Pawns are the numbered field operatives of the High Table, presented less as a conventional institution than as a roster of specialized agents whose identities are organized through aliases, combat functions, and recorded engagements. Their decisive narrative significance lies in this tension between bureaucratic classification and bodily vulnerability: the High Table can reduce them to numbered units, while Jack’s response converts those same units into named targets in his campaign against the organization.

Structure and Identified Operatives

The Pawns appear in a compiled intelligence list assembled over years by Selfia Cordelica’s people. Jack examines a dossier in which each participant has a drop-down profile recording skills, activities, and sightings, alongside unusually intimate data such as blood types, ingested foods, and speech patterns. The system therefore treats the High Table’s personnel as trackable objects of knowledge, turning a clandestine network into a catalogue that can be searched and cross-referenced.

The roster assigns identities by number and alias. Pawn number 1 is Robo Kat, whose true identity is unknown and whose status is recorded as killed in action. Pawn number 2 is Man Maid, identified as Finn Star; Pawn number 3 is Mad Hatter, identified as Juliana Ardona; and Pawn number 8 is Gunslinger, identified as Ivan Petroff. Other entries include Cobalt Claw, recorded as Lerry James and killed in action, and Metal Man, whose identity is unknown and who is also recorded as killed in action. Blizzard Butcher, identified as Serena James, is likewise marked killed in action. The list also includes Raven Mask, identified as Cici Vernon, although the supplied record does not establish that operative’s later fate.

Combat Role and Methods

The Pawns function as active combatants rather than merely symbolic members of the High Table. Their aliases suggest differentiated tactical identities, and the dossier’s emphasis on skills, sightings, and bodycam material frames their work as a sequence of monitored field engagements. Their individuality is real enough to be documented, but their numbering preserves the organization’s impersonal military logic: a person becomes Pawn number 5 or Pawn number 8 before becoming a public name.

Pawn number 5, Cobalt Claw, is shown in bodycam footage fighting Python Est and roughly a dozen other Awakened. Cobalt Claw channels distinctive luna energy into claws, using it to tear through CHECKMATE agents. The recordings accumulate across several engagements, creating a repeated image of an operative whose combat ability is formidable and whose violence is preserved as evidence. The sequence ends when Python Est kills him by strangling him with vines, explaining the dossier’s KIA notation while also demonstrating that a Pawn’s specialized power does not guarantee survival against a stronger or better-positioned opponent.

Jack’s Retaliation

The Pawns become central to Jack’s revenge because the organization’s distributed violence is embodied by individual agents. During a later confrontation, Jack pins the Maid to the ground with silver feathers that pierce his ankles and arms. The execution is not private: dozens of onlookers gather, and recording devices are aimed at the naked man as he publicly kills the operative. The scene transforms a concealed organizational hierarchy into a spectacle in which one of its agents is made to answer for the wider institution.

Jack explicitly treats the killing as part of a continuing campaign. He tells the Pawn that he has killed two members of the organization and is coming for the rest of it. The statement gives the Pawns a collective function in the plot: each operative is both an individual opponent and a representative node in the High Table’s larger structure. The Maid’s resistance ends in extreme physical injury, including the rupture of an eye, and the surrounding crowd ensures that the punishment becomes witnessed and reproducible rather than disappearing into clandestine violence.

Significance and Limits of the Record

The available evidence presents the Pawns through files, footage, aliases, numbered positions, and death classifications. This mode of presentation emphasizes surveillance and information control. Even details as personal as diet and speech patterns are absorbed into the dossier, suggesting that the High Table’s operatives can be mapped through data before they are confronted in the field. Yet the catalogue is incomplete: several identities remain unknown, and the record offers no comparable biography for most of the named agents. The organization’s apparent precision therefore coexists with anonymity.

Their repeated treatment as numbered units also sharpens the contrast between institutional abstraction and individual consequence. Cobalt Claw’s luna-energy attacks, Python Est’s vine strangulation, the Maid’s pinned body, and Jack’s promise to pursue the remaining organization all give physical form to a conflict that the roster initially renders administrative. The Pawns’ narrative role is consequently double-edged: they are expendable instruments within the High Table’s system, but their deaths and public defeat expose the cost of that system and intensify Jack’s war against it.
