Python Est

Awakening the Angel System: Apocalypse: A LitRPG Progression Fantasy

Python Est is a military officer whose importance lies in the relationship between professional discipline and chosen self-sacrifice. He is not merely a subordinate who accompanies Jack: across the campaign, he becomes a trusted operational counterweight, a soldier capable of translating uncertain political decisions into concrete action. His defining moment comes aboard the FYR, when wounded personnel, exhausted ammunition, and failing command structures leave him with a terrible choice. By assuming control of the airship and deliberately sacrificing it against Heaven, Python turns military authority into an act of collective protection. The later sight of him wearing a wedding ring and serving as Secretary of Defense confirms that the sacrifice does not end his story; it becomes the basis of the public role he carries afterward.

Identity and Military Function

Python is identified by the rank of colonel and by his place within the Imperial Army. His conduct combines the familiarity of a seasoned officer with an unsentimental understanding of danger. When he and Jack pause in a cave after two hours of movement, Python does not treat the halt as rest alone: he immediately orders Lieutenant Ashfield to establish sentries, rotating patrols, and a fire watch while the commandos prepare for the arrival of the Theocracy partisans. The scene presents him as a man who turns uncertainty into procedure. Even in a temporary shelter, he thinks in terms of perimeter, rotation, and preparedness.

His social presence is less ceremonial than practical. When Selfia arranges a possible match for CC, she describes the prospective officer as handsome, well-groomed, fond of whiskey, marked by a combat scar, and formerly assigned to a kindersoldat unit like CC. The scene places Python within a military culture in which service history, scars, and rank are part of personal identity as much as biography. The reference also connects him to CC through shared experience rather than abstract compatibility: the possibility of their relationship emerges from the institution that shaped them both.

Association with Jack

Python repeatedly serves as a stabilizing presence around Jack, especially when Jack’s political instincts threaten to become violent. After Selfia rejects a request, Python and Jack stand together on the observation deck of the MECHFrame launch bay. Python jokes that he is there to babysit Jack during the planned conversation with the Bishop, explaining that Selfia wants someone present to ensure Jack does not murder him. Beneath the humor is a clear assignment of responsibility. Python is trusted to remain close to Jack not because he is passive, but because he can monitor the boundary between force and excess.

That role becomes more serious when Jack addresses prisoners captured after the battle of Windermere. Jack says that he may execute them if necessary and imagines building his children’s future on corpses, threatening to bring the guillotine down on House Light if it stands against him. Python is not shown answering the threat in that exchange, but his established function makes the scene significant: he belongs to the small circle expected to remain near Jack when royal policy, military necessity, and personal rage become difficult to separate. His value to Jack is therefore both tactical and moral. He does not erase Jack’s violence; he provides a human counterpressure around it.

The FYR and the Decision to Sacrifice

Python’s decisive arc unfolds during the assault on Heaven. In the command deck of the King Raven-class airship, he empties his gun while ammunition and mana run low. Lieutenant Harper gives him a shotgun before collapsing against the bulkhead, and Python continues firing buckshot loaded with seeds at attacking slicers while trying to keep the ship’s defenses functioning. The details make the crisis material rather than symbolic: spent magazines, bullet casings, an exhausted subordinate, and a weapon passed from one failing body to another.

When Python reaches the limit of his strength, he apologizes to the older officer he calls “old man,” removes him from the command chair, and takes command himself. The ship’s systems have been slaved to that chair, and the crew has passed out, giving Python limited executive control over an air carrier carrying enough ordnance to level a city. He therefore inherits not only authority but an enormous destructive capacity. The question is how that capacity will be used: the FYR cannot destroy the vast structure by collision, but it can slow it down.

Python chooses the collision. He broadcasts across all signals that he is assuming command of the FYR and orders every hand to prepare for impact. He disengages the airship’s safety parameters and alters its course toward the opening in the shield Jack has created. The countdown reduces his decision to irreversible increments: five thousand feet, then two hundred. His final reflection concerns the loved ones he sees falling onto the command deck, while another voice calls his name. The moment preserves both halves of his character. The officer acts through command language and mechanical procedure, yet the sacrifice is not abstract; it is made in full awareness of the people and attachments he is leaving behind.

Jack sees the FYR, coated by demonspawn, pass by and strike the floating structure. He screams Python’s name as the airship detonates against Heaven. Sahaqiel then pulls Jack away from the explosion, and the pair fall together with their wings forming a protective enclosure. Python’s action thus changes the immediate conditions of the battle even though it removes him from the field. The FYR becomes the instrument that buys time, while Python’s disappearance becomes one of the emotional shocks through which Jack experiences the cost of victory.

Sacrifice, Survival, and Public Afterlife

The later account does not present Python as forgotten or reduced solely to a death scene. A year afterward, Ada asks him how things are with CC, and Python answers that life is much the same, though CC complains that he is rarely home because he serves as Secretary of Defense. He wears a gold wedding ring, matching the gold stars on his shoulders, and the narration identifies those stars as a rank and reward for his selfless sacrifice. The public order has absorbed the battlefield act into its hierarchy: what began as a desperate decision at the controls becomes a recognized mark of honor and office.

His continued presence also changes the meaning of the FYR sequence. The sacrifice remains real in its immediate emotional effect, but Python’s later appearance establishes that the narrative treats his commitment as survival through consequence rather than simple disappearance. He returns to a world in which CC is his spouse, his military service has expanded into national defense, and his absence from home has become an ordinary burden of office. The contrast is deliberately sharp: the man who once had to seize command because everyone around him was collapsing now occupies a formal position whose demands keep him away from the person he loves.

Narrative Significance

Python’s narrative role is built through recurrence rather than spectacle. He appears in patrol planning, political supervision, battlefield command, and the later administration of the state. Each setting tests the same quality under different pressures. In the cave, discipline protects a vulnerable unit. Beside Jack, proximity becomes a form of restraint. On the FYR, command becomes sacrifice. After the war, responsibility becomes institutional service.

His trajectory also provides a counterpoint to Jack’s transformation. Jack’s path repeatedly joins power to emotional suppression, dread, and increasingly severe choices; Python’s path joins power to duty and to the willingness to spend himself for others. Yet Python is not presented as untouched by violence. His military identity includes combat scars, child-soldier associations, exhaustion, and the practical intimacy of weapons. What distinguishes him is not innocence but the direction in which he deploys the authority produced by war. At the decisive threshold, he does not use the FYR’s destructive force to preserve himself. He uses it to create an opening for the larger coalition, making sacrifice the clearest expression of his professional and personal identity.
