Zanzibar Raid
Awakening the Angel System: Apocalypse: A LitRPG Progression FantasyZanzibar Raid is the coalition’s strategically vital assault on Zanzibar, an operation born from intelligence, scarcity, and the need to project military power beyond the Empire’s familiar territory. Its immediate goals are to seize the port city, capture the Red Rook, and secure the ships required for a wider expedition into the Forgotten Continent. What begins as a carefully synchronized nighttime raid is exposed as a trap, forcing Jack and Admiral Skirita to choose between preserving the fleet and continuing the attack. The raid nevertheless succeeds as a staging ground: Zanzibar becomes the point from which thousands of soldiers and refugees gather for the coalition’s larger invasion.
Causes and Strategic Background
Zanzibar enters the story as a mystery hidden inside the High Table’s logistics network. Earlier intelligence had produced apparently disconnected details—money transfers, liquid-nitrogen shipments, and apples imported from the Theocracy into cities across the Empire and the Corporate Alliance. The data initially seems too fragmentary to explain the organization’s power, but the search for the larger pattern eventually identifies Zanzibar as a place where equipment and personnel are being concentrated.
The situation is made urgent by the collapse surrounding Selfia’s displaced government. The Apostle invasion has turned Lunacrypt Capital into a wasteland of corpses, demonspawn, and abandoned infrastructure, forcing Selfia to move her base and accommodate millions of displaced Imperial citizens. Food, ammunition, replacement parts, and political cohesion are all in short supply. The resulting migration also attracts demonspawn, and the coalition’s logistical crisis makes access to transport as important as access to weapons.
Selfia’s briefing defines the operation’s three linked objectives: seize Zanzibar, interrogate the Red Rook, and capture the boats. The Forgotten Continent is saturated with corruption and demonspawn, its smog blocks satellite imaging, and its environment threatens filters, obsifiter generators, mana-dependent equipment, MECHFrames, airships, Awakened soldiers, and even automated machines. Because the largely landlocked Empire has no substantial reserve of seafaring craft, the ships at Zanzibar are not merely prizes; they are essential to survival and to the coalition’s ability to continue the war.
Planning and Night Assault
Admiral Skirita, one of the few Imperial officers experienced with airborne, land, and sea vessels, directs the attack from a portable holotable displaying Zanzibar’s layout. His plan divides the force according to function. The commandos will split into six-man teams and seize the ten ships docked at the port, while Jack lands at the harbor to prevent enemy soldiers from rallying to their vessels. The main force will then breach the city walls and trap the defenders between Jack’s position and the advancing tanks. The total force numbers two hundred, with one-third assigned to secure the boats.
Under cover of darkness, Jack hides in the vapor of the clouds and surveys the port through a periscope. The scene is unfamiliar to him: he has never seen a boat before and expects the vessels to resemble armed airships or enormous landships. Their dull gray-metal appearance disappoints him, but their military value is unmistakable. Once the teams report that they are synchronized, the commandos climb the sides of the ships, avoiding guards and crew members with deliberate stealth before slipping aboard.
The quiet approach collapses when sirens erupt and one vessel explodes. The blast throws the entire base into alarm, while the commandos attempt to determine what has gone wrong. Jack dive-bombs the port, lands on the dock, and uses his feathers to extinguish guards moving toward the ships. He then raises a dome of Wind to shield the boats as mortars strike the city and artillery begins softening its defenses. The attack has shifted from infiltration to open assault, but the original division of objectives remains: Jack must protect the captured vessels while Skirita’s forces press against the city.
The Trap and the Red Rook
The destruction of another ship confirms that the explosions are not an accident. Jack recognizes the possibility that the High Table has prepared a ruse to lure the Selfians into the harbor. As commandos race across the floating vessels to disarm the bombs, High Table guards attack him with improvised weapons, including a wrench and a knife. He answers by erecting a barrier of swirling Wind that turns aside their gunfire and rocks the boats with gale force.
The trap’s leverage becomes explicit when the enemy threatens to destroy every ship in the port. Jack immediately orders Admiral Skirita to halt the attack, warning that the boats are rigged to explode. For a moment, he cannot know whether the admiral will sacrifice the vessels in order to preserve the assault. The approaching Selfian Wyvern fighters finally pass overhead without releasing their payload, confirming that Skirita has obeyed the order and that the fleet has been spared.
The purpose of the trap is then revealed. The Red Rook steps out from the crowd of High Table followers and tells Jack that the operation was arranged to meet him. The raid therefore becomes more than a contest over a harbor. The coalition has been drawn into a controlled confrontation with the High Table’s chief enforcer, while its supposedly decisive maritime objective remains vulnerable to sabotage. The enemy’s ships function simultaneously as strategic resources, hostages, and bait.
From Raid to Expedition
The coalition’s wider purpose becomes public on the docks after the immediate fighting. Thousands gather beneath the silver-and-blue banners of the Soldiers of the Coalition, prepared to end the demonspawn terror. Selfia addresses them not in the dignified clothing expected of a monarch but in a bloodstained tank top and fatigues, using her appearance to convey the scale of the emergency and the personal cost of the undertaking. Jack stands beside her as aircraft gather overhead behind a carrier-class airship, forming the spearhead of the invasion force.
Selfia’s speech places Zanzibar within a history of human survival. She names ruined strongholds and cities, including Lunacrypt, Soldaer, Clausterfiell, and Solarus, and warns that humanity’s remaining bastions are being destroyed. Her conclusion is not defensive. She tells the assembled citizens and soldiers that their only option is to attack, then presents the expedition as the greatest undertaken since humanity went into space. The raid thus supplies the material foundation for a collective declaration of war: ships, soldiers, equipment, and a beachhead become instruments of a single public decision to carry the conflict into enemy territory.
The operation also exposes the price of assembling that force. After Jack’s judgments continue for two days, a massive mixture of landships, airships, caravans, refugees, suppliers, and would-be participants gathers around Zanzibar. Many refugees follow the trail of incoming materials, while demonspawn follow the refugees; Apostles butcher civilians before Sahaqiel and Selfia’s teams can intervene. The port is consequently both a military concentration point and a humanitarian danger zone, where the movement of supplies draws the vulnerable and the predatory into the same corridor.
Consequences and Significance
The immediate consequence of Zanzibar Raid is the preservation and capture of the boats needed for the Forgotten Continent Expedition, despite the High Table’s attempt to turn the harbor into a mass detonation. The attack also identifies the Red Rook as the central enemy presence behind Zanzibar’s lost communications and military buildup, giving the coalition a target whose importance is political as well as operational.
Its longer consequence is the transformation of Zanzibar from an isolated port into a coalition beachhead. The city becomes the departure point for a force large enough to include aircraft, a carrier-class airship, landships, caravans, Imperial soldiers, Paladins, refugees, and supply networks. The raid therefore links tactical action to strategic movement: the seizure of ships makes the expedition possible, the expedition requires the public mobilization represented by Selfia’s speech, and that mobilization produces a new concentration of soldiers and civilians exposed to the same demonspawn threat the campaign seeks to destroy.
The later landing on the new continent reveals the cost concealed by the triumphant rhetoric. Ada reaches shores stained by corpses, flesh, and poisoned red water while Imperial soldiers and Paladins strip equipment from the dead. Zanzibar’s banners and speeches promise humanity’s future; the beachhead delivers a landscape of contamination and mass death. That contrast gives the raid its decisive narrative meaning. It is a victory of logistics and initiative, but not a clean triumph: the coalition acquires the means to continue the war only by entering a campaign whose first visible horizon is already a bloodbath.
