Buck Rogers wheelchair

Bag of Bones

The Buck Rogers wheelchair is Maxwell Devore’s highly customized powered mobility device, built not merely to carry him but to move with speed and precision across rough ground. Its conspicuous engineering gives physical form to Devore’s command of his surroundings: during his confrontation with Mike Noonan, the chair advances, turns, and blocks Mike’s passage before Devore’s attack drives Mike into Dark Score Lake.

Design and Equipment

Mike first takes in the chair as an assemblage of specialized parts rather than as an ordinary wheelchair. It resembles a motorcycle sidecar crossed with a lunar lander, with multiple chrome wheels along both sides and a row of larger wheels at the rear. Each wheel appears to have its own suspension, allowing the chair to travel smoothly over uneven ground such as The Street.

An enclosed engine compartment sits above the rear wheels. A black fiberglass nacelle with red pinstriping covers Devore’s legs, while a dish-shaped device embedded in the nacelle looks to Mike like a satellite dish and suggests a computerized obstacle-avoidance system, perhaps even an autopilot. The armrests carry controls, including a silver toggle switch that Devore uses to operate the chair.

The chair also incorporates equipment for Devore’s oxygen use. A four-foot green tank is holstered at its side, connected by a hose to a clear accordion tube and a mask resting in his lap. The machine’s arrangement brings propulsion, maneuverability, and respiratory support together in one vehicle.

Markings and Appearance

The vehicle’s scale and futuristic construction initially make it seem almost unreal to Mike, but a familiar marker anchors it in the ordinary world: a bumper sticker on the nacelle reads, “I BLEED DODGER BLUE.” The small declaration of allegiance sits beneath the dish-like device, a mundane piece of personal identification on a machine otherwise compared to science-fiction technology.

Mike calls it Devore’s Buck Rogers wheelchair, a name that catches its conspicuously futuristic appearance. Its design contrasts with Devore’s visibly frail body, but the contrast does not make the machine seem passive. The chair is capable, controlled, and conspicuous; its many wheels and independent suspension make mobility itself part of Devore’s presence.

Use in the Confrontation on The Street

When Devore encounters Mike on The Street, the chair immediately changes the distance and balance between them. With a touch of the toggle, Devore moves ten feet closer, the wheels responding independently over the ground. The chair advances with a quiet, smooth motion, and Devore’s movement makes clear that his physical frailty does not prevent him from exerting force or controlling the space around him.

After Mike tries to leave, Devore drives the chair toward him and stops just short of hitting him. He then turns it quickly to cut off Mike’s attempted route past him. The repeated movements transform the chair from conveyance into an instrument for blocking and intimidation: Devore can close distance, halt, pivot, and deny passage while Mike is on foot.

The confrontation escalates when Devore again operates the switch and rushes at Mike. Mike evades the approaching chair by rolling to his left, but the ground gives way beneath him and he falls into the lake. The device does not itself carry Mike into the water; Devore’s charge forces the evasive movement that leads to the fall. In that sequence, the wheelchair’s practical mobility becomes decisive to the scene’s outcome.

Narrative Significance

The chair joins medical equipment and mechanical power in a single object. Its oxygen tank and mask make Devore’s physical needs visible, while its controls, suspension, and speed make him formidable in the immediate encounter. The narrative therefore presents the wheelchair as both support equipment and an extension of Devore’s ability to maneuver through a contested space.

Its importance is expressed through action rather than technical explanation. Mike notices the suspension because it promises a smooth ride over rough terrain; during the confrontation, the same independently moving wheels and responsive controls allow Devore to approach and intercept him. The chair’s design is not simply descriptive decoration: it establishes how Devore can use mobility to determine who may pass, and it helps set in motion Mike’s fall into Dark Score Lake.
