Max Devore and Rogette Whitmore

Bag of Bones

Max Devore and Rogette Whitmore act in concert as allies in the conflict with Mike Noonan and the custody dispute over Kyra. The text presents them not through an account of how they met or what binds them privately, but through a sequence of coordinated actions: Whitmore accompanies Devore, carries out his instructions, relays his proposed bargain, and later speaks to the press about his death. Their alliance is made visible through its practical work.

Their Alliance in the Confrontation

Mike encounters Devore with Whitmore at his side. The meeting is the only time Mike says he ever met Devore, but the pair’s arrival quickly establishes a shared adversarial role. Devore addresses Mike while Whitmore remains present, making her more than a name associated with the custody campaign: she is part of the confrontation itself.

When Mike tries to leave, Devore invokes The Street as a place everyone may use, then maneuvers his wheelchair toward him and stops just short of striking him. Whitmore laughs at the encounter. The moment shows a division of conduct within their alliance: Devore uses the wheelchair and his control of the situation to threaten and intimidate, while Whitmore’s laughter signals her participation in the humiliation of their opponent. The text depicts them acting together, although it does not state what either privately feels about the other.

Whitmore as Devore’s Agent

The coordination becomes more explicit when Devore tells Mike that he has not properly introduced Whitmore and describes her past in college softball and field hockey. He then directs her to demonstrate her skills. Whitmore walks past Devore’s moving wheelchair, carrying rocks she has gathered from beside the path, and throws one toward Mike. The incident turns Devore’s introduction into an instruction and Whitmore’s athletic background into a means of carrying out his threat.

Later, Whitmore conveys a written message in Devore’s name. The note offers to end his efforts to gain custody of his granddaughter if Mike will stop asking questions about Devore and cease legal maneuvering. It asks Mike to communicate his acceptance through Richard Osgood and warns him not to forget that custody carries responsibilities. Whitmore signs the message and adds a separate, insulting postscript attributed to Devore. In this episode she serves as the channel for his terms, presenting the custody campaign as something he is prepared to suspend if Mike withdraws from both the legal and personal conflict.

Mike does not treat the note as confirmation that the dispute is over. He rereads it and considers contacting Mattie, but decides he needs certainty first. When he calls Warrington's, Whitmore answers after he identifies himself. Her mocking question about whether he enjoyed his swim makes clear that the message’s conciliatory offer has not erased their hostility. The telephone call also shows Whitmore continuing to speak for the pair while maintaining a taunting, adversarial manner.

Devore’s Death and Whitmore’s Public Role

After Devore’s death, Whitmore becomes the visible source of information for the news media. Bill Dean tells Mike that Whitmore called the television reporters and held a press conference in the parlor at Warrington's at two in the morning, seated on the large maroon sofa. County deputies and a representative from a funeral home were visible in the background. The account establishes her as the person who took the story to the press, extending her role from private intermediary to public spokesperson.

Across these episodes, Whitmore repeatedly performs actions that connect Devore’s wishes or conflict with the outside world: she accompanies him during the encounter with Mike, follows his direction in the confrontation, communicates his proposed custody bargain, and addresses reporters after his death. The evidence supports a functional picture of close cooperation, but leaves the basis and limits of their personal relationship unstated. Its narrative significance lies in how their alliance turns Devore’s campaign into coordinated pressure, with Whitmore serving as both participant and representative.
