Mike Noonan and Max Devore
Bag of BonesMike Noonan and Max Devore are adversaries in the custody struggle over Kyra. Their conflict comes to a head when Devore tries to drive Mike away from Mattie and Kyra, and Mike refuses to leave them in Devore’s hands. The confrontation establishes their opposed claims to power: Devore treats the family as something he can control, while Mike places his loyalty to Mattie and Kyra above the danger of standing against him.
The ultimatum and refusal
Devore frames his demand as an offer to save Mike’s soul, but the choice he gives him is stark: leave immediately, without packing, and abandon Mattie and Kyra to Devore. Mike answers with a refusal grounded not in any claim that he can control what happens next, but in a firm commitment that Devore will never get Kyra while Mike can prevent it. Devore counters with a threat that the coming weeks will expose Mike to events he will wish he had not witnessed. Even as the exchange turns hostile, Mike says he is going home and asks to pass, invoking the principle that The Street belongs to everyone.
That appeal to shared ground does not make the encounter safe. Devore drives his wheelchair toward Mike and stops just short of hitting him, leaving Mike to jump back. The movement makes plain that their dispute is not merely a disagreement over custody or legal strategy: Devore is willing to use physical intimidation, and Mike’s refusal puts him directly in its path.
Rogette’s attack and Mike’s counterthreat
Devore then directs Rogette to demonstrate her athletic ability. She throws a rock at Mike, narrowly missing him and landing in the water behind him. The attack carries out Devore’s earlier threat through an accomplice, turning the confrontation into a direct attempt to frighten or injure Mike. Devore’s taunting encouragement makes clear that he is not simply present during Rogette’s violence; he prompts it.
Later, Mike responds by warning that if either Devore or Rogette tries anything similar again, he will come after Devore, and that he will retaliate against Rogette if he sees her on The Street. His outburst surprises him: he is astonished to discover he was capable of speaking that way, and feels disgusted with himself afterward. Yet the threat marks a change in how he meets their intimidation. Rather than retreating from the conflict, he makes clear that an attack will have consequences.
The proposed bargain
Mike states the terms of the deal with Devore: Mike and the lawyers will be silent, and Devore will get out of Mattie and Kyra’s lives. His agreement is conditional on Devore keeping that promise; Mike begins to set out what will happen if he does not, but Rogette interrupts and disappears before he can finish. The exchange therefore records a truce as an unsettled arrangement, not a reconciliation. Mike accepts a way to end the immediate confrontation while leaving the essential boundary intact: Devore must stop interfering with Mattie and Kyra.
Rogette’s part in the negotiations reinforces the imbalance in the encounter. She has already thrown at Mike at Devore’s direction, and now challenges his confidence that the bargain will hold. The confrontation closes without showing whether Devore would honor its terms, so Mike’s assent cannot be read as proof that trust has been restored.
Devore’s death and the local aftermath
The proposed settlement is overtaken by Devore’s suicide. Bill tells Mike that Devore died the previous night, after getting into warm water and putting a plastic bag over his head. Mike’s immediate response is a shiver and the thought that, given Devore’s condition, the death probably did not take long. The news ends the prospect of any further direct confrontation between the two men, but it does not make their conflict disappear from the town’s social life.
Mike recognizes that many people may blame him for Devore’s death. He considers the accusation unreasonable in light of Devore’s physical condition, and knows it would not represent a majority view, yet expects it to gain some credibility in the short term. His awareness connects the private struggle to the pressures of the community: Devore’s death leaves Mike exposed to suspicion even after the man who threatened him can no longer act.
The meaning of their opposition
The relation is defined by competing claims over Kyra and by the means each man uses to defend them. Devore’s ultimatum asks Mike to abandon both Mattie and the child; his wheelchair feint and his direction of Rogette’s rock-throwing give that demand a threatening force. Mike’s refusal and later warning establish that he will not accept Devore’s control as inevitable, even when resisting it brings personal risk.
The aftermath complicates any simple sense of victory. Devore’s death ends the immediate contest, but Mike expects blame, and Bill advises him to keep his head down and consider leaving the TR until matters settle. The relationship thus concludes not with a public vindication of Mike or a confirmed resolution of the town’s response, but with Devore gone and the social consequences of their conflict still in motion.
