Rogette Whitmore attacks Kyra and drowns

Bag of Bones

Rogette Whitmore attacks Kyra and drowns in the storm at Warrington's Lodge: a rescue attempt on a damaged lakeside dock turns into a supernatural farewell, as Mike tries to protect Kyra and the apparition of her dead mother intervenes. The episode brings immediate physical danger and grief together, ending with Kyra safe in Mike’s arms but unable to hold on to Mattie.

Causes and Setting

The confrontation unfolds during a storm that has felled trees and battered the lodge grounds. Mike reaches the path after finding Kyra’s white hair ribbons, then hears a tree crash and Rogette call after the child. By the time he gets to the lake, the dock between the shore and The Sunset Bar is twisting above the water: boards are missing, its supports are coming loose, and the storm repeatedly shifts its footing.

Kyra is already partway along the dock, trying to balance on its slick boards. Rogette stands between her and shore, reaching out and calling to her. The setting makes Rogette’s pursuit dangerous even before any physical attack: each step forward by Rogette drives Kyra farther along a precarious walkway over the lake.

The Pursuit and Mike’s Intervention

Rogette coaxes Kyra with talk of a game and chocolate, adopting a sugary, child-directed manner while continuing to advance. Kyra refuses her and backs away. Mike crawls beneath a fallen tree to approach without drawing Rogette’s attention, then closes the distance when he sees that Kyra is in immediate danger.

Kyra spots Mike and calls out, giving Rogette time to turn toward him. Mike rushes in and strikes at her, but slips on the wet ground; his joined hands glance off Rogette’s shoulder rather than landing the blow he intended. Rogette then runs out along the dock. Mike follows and grabs her hair, pulling away what proves to be a wig. Its removal reveals that the woman pursuing Kyra is Rogette, Kyra’s aunt, whose age and appearance had made her seem almost unrecognizable.

Mattie’s Appearance and Rogette’s Death

As Kyra retreats, a wave surges beneath a damaged section of the dock. Water rises into a twisting form that takes on the appearance of Mattie. Rogette stops in the water, and another surge lifts and drops the walkway, throwing her over its side. The same movement tosses Kyra onto the porch of The Sunset Bar, out of immediate danger.

Rogette does not simply disappear beneath the waves. She reaches up from the water and catches hold of Mike, attempting to pull him in. Mike responds instinctively by hauling her upward. During the struggle, Rogette bites his wrist; a wave then drives the broken edge of the partly submerged dock against her, and the lake carries her away. The storm, the collapsing structure, and the water’s force together bring the attack to its fatal end.

Kyra’s Farewell and Aftermath

While Mike is occupied with Rogette, Kyra sees Mattie’s figure near the bar. She reaches toward her mother, but cannot embrace her: her arms pass through the apparition. Mattie appears to speak, and Mike sees her turn toward him, though he cannot understand what she is saying. He answers with a silent gesture, kissing his palms and holding them out; the shimmering hands rise as if to receive the kisses.

Kyra cries out for her mother and throws her arms around the figure. The contact leaves her drenched, and when she pulls back, Mattie is gone, leaving only water on the boards. Mike carefully crosses the unstable dock and takes Kyra in his arms. She clings to him, shivering, and tells him that her mother came. Rogette’s death ends the immediate threat, but Mattie’s brief appearance offers no lasting reunion: the rescue culminates in safety and separation at once.
