Sara’s attempt to make Mike drown Kyra
Bag of BonesSara’s attempt to make Mike drown Kyra brings the immediate danger of the storm-night crisis into the bathroom: Sara urges Mike to use the warm bath to kill the sleeping child, and her influence briefly takes hold inside him. He drains the tub instead and promises to help Sara rest, but the temptation and his awareness of the nearby lake make clear that his resistance has not made the threat disappear.
The child and the threat
Mike finds Kyra asleep on her side, clutching her stuffed dog beneath her jaw. The child has not moved since he left her, and he has chosen not to take the dirty toy away from her. From the bathroom comes the steady sound of water dripping into the tub; the scene’s ordinary domestic details become dangerous when Sara speaks from within it, insisting that the water is still warm and urging Mike to be Kyra’s friend and father by doing what Sara wants.
The appeal targets Mike through the language of care. Rather than confronting him as an open adversary, Sara entwines the proposed violence with his role as Kyra’s protector. That reversal makes the episode a struggle over what fatherly care means: the child’s vulnerability is the very condition that Sara tries to exploit, while Mike’s responsibility to keep her safe becomes the basis for resisting.
Mike’s resistance and its limits
Mike recognizes that some part of him wants to obey. He connects this susceptibility to Jo’s earlier efforts to keep him away from the TR and Sara Laughs, and to her secrecy about a possible pregnancy. The thought of the warm tub and the possibility of holding Kyra beneath the water expose a frightening internal division: he knows the act would be wrong, yet the desire is present rather than safely external to him. He also links the contemplated drowning to Carla Dean’s death, recalling the contrast of white clothing and red stockings against the burning woods.
Mike says that Sara knows many tricks and is extremely strong, but that recognition does not by itself free him. When the bathroom door resists his passage, he pushes it open; the medicine cabinet swings back and its glass breaks, scattering its contents. Mike hears Sara shouting in frustration as he pulls the plug and lets the bathwater drain. He throws the plug down the hall, making the decision to empty the tub harder to reverse in the moment. The small, practical action interrupts the immediate plan, even as the disturbance in the room shows that Sara is still exerting force.
Sara’s demand and Mike’s promise
Mike asks how many victims Sara has had besides Carla Dean, Kerry Auster, and Kyra, offering several possible numbers. Sara answers that she wants all of them. The response comes not only in Sara’s voice but in Mike’s as well: her influence has entered his thoughts deeply enough that the lethal demand and his own awareness of a possible next step overlap. Even with the tub empty and the water pump temporarily out of action, he thinks the lake remains available if he changes his mind.
The lake therefore preserves the threat after the bathroom has been made safer. Mike understands that draining the tub has blocked one immediate means, not ended the underlying danger. He tells Sara that he will help her rest and makes that a promise. The assurance offers a direction other than the deaths she demands, though the scene does not show that Sara accepts it or that the promise is fulfilled.
Aftermath and unresolved danger
The last water spirals away. Mike checks on Kyra again; she remains asleep, and the sense that Sara is in the room with him has passed. Bunter’s bell is quiet, but Mike still feels uneasy about leaving the child alone. He judges that he must continue his work and not linger, expecting county and state police eventually to arrive despite the storm and fallen trees.
As Mike moves into the hall, the thunder and wind begin to subside, but the sense of being watched does not. He tries to attribute it to nerves before walking toward the entry. The ending thus separates the retreat of the storm from the persistence of supernatural danger: Mike has protected Kyra from Sara’s immediate attempt, yet he remains aware that the lake is still a possible route to the same violence and that something he does not identify as Sara may also be watching him.
