Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction

Malibu is a coastal setting associated in the memoir with Nic’s work in recovery and with visits that bring him back into the life of his family. Its beaches and trails offer scenes of shared activity and apparent renewal, while the narrative’s later image of Nic running above a deserted cove keeps that promise of recovery open-ended.

Recovery Work and the Coast

After settling into Herbert House, Nic’s friends in Alcoholics Anonymous help him find a technician job at Promises, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program based in Malibu. He drives patients to meetings and medical appointments, dispenses medication, and assists counselors. The work gives him a practical role in helping others, even as the routine and support of recovery help sustain him.

Family Visits and Shared Places

Near the end of summer, Nic’s father, Karen, Jasper, and Daisy travel to see him in Los Angeles. The family reunites on a beach, where Nic and his siblings build sand castles and play in the surf. On later weekends, Nic takes them to another beach, a secluded spot near Malibu reached by a steep trail. The outings are part of a cautious return to family life: Karen and the children had not immediately resumed contact because they feared being hurt again, even as love for Nic pulled them toward him.

Trails, Distance, and Uncertainty

Malibu also appears in a sharply composed image of Nic running along a fire trail through brush above a canyon, near a deserted cove overlooking the coast. The details—his headband, large sneakers, running shorts, and fitted T-shirt—place his body in motion against a landscape of open trail and sea. This image belongs to a memoir that does not treat improvement as a final cure: family visits and meaningful work mark real change, but they do not settle the uncertainty of Nic’s long-term recovery.
