Tiergarten

Berlin Alexanderplatz

Tiergarten appears as the setting for a chance meeting that turns into an intimate, risky encounter. An unnamed married man meets a pretty boy there, walks with him for an hour, and feels an overwhelming desire to be tender to him. The park’s open, public space is the beginning of the episode, not its destination: the two leave for a hotel, where their privacy proves vulnerable to scrutiny.

Setting and Encounter

The account places the meeting in Tiergarten, where the boy links arms with the bald man almost at once. They stroll together for an hour. During that walk, the man’s desire to be tender grows urgent; although he is married and has noticed similar feelings before, on this occasion he decides to act on them.

From Public Space to Private Room

The pair’s movement from Tiergarten to a small hotel changes the circumstances of the encounter. The man offers the boy money, and the boy asks for five or ten marks because he is broke. The man gives him his whole wallet. The scene frames this generosity as part of the man’s intense tenderness, while also making money and vulnerability part of their exchange.

Surveillance and Narrative Significance

The park encounter leads into a hotel room watched through spy-holes in the door. The landlord and landlady observe the pair and threaten to report the man; their surveillance turns an intimate meeting into a source of exposure and shame. Tiergarten therefore marks the episode’s point of approach: a public stroll allows desire to develop, but the movement toward privacy does not secure freedom from observation.
