A Clean Record

The Ordinary Agent
Unconventional recruitment
The narrator has no espionage or language training, and the agency presents those absences as useful. Her unremarkable record allows her to enter a criminal setting without the markers of a professional operative.
She accepts an assignment that asks for courage and equilibrium more than specialized skill. The promise of patriotic service gives a large purpose to an otherwise private life.
An unfinished bargain
The agency warns that she may not return unchanged. That warning frames the mission as a bargain whose consequences cannot be fully understood in advance.
Recording Begins

Listening from Nearby
A concealed instrument
The narrator activates the In-ear Microphone when her Designated Mate takes an important call on a balcony. She does not need to understand the language; closeness and recording are themselves treated as success.
The device turns a nap into an intelligence-gathering position. Her apparent passivity lets her remain beside a man who might otherwise guard his conversations.
The danger of access
An angry subject moves less carefully with his words, but anger also makes the room unpredictable. The narrator must judge how near she can get without exposing the mechanism or herself.
The Remote Compound

Crossing into Isolation
A change of scale
A speedboat delivers the narrator and her Designated Mate to a remote villa occupied by another powerful man. The landscape, guarded approach, and formal greeting show that the mission has reached a more consequential layer of the network.
She is not acknowledged by the new host, an omission that suits her camouflage. Being disregarded gives her an opportunity to watch without becoming the focus of attention.
A precarious place
The narrator must remain present enough to preserve access yet inconspicuous enough to be forgotten. The villa makes that balance more dangerous by surrounding its guests with controlled space and violence.
The Data Extraction

The High-Yield Gamble
Finding the handset
The narrator enters the host’s sleeping quarters and locates the place where he keeps the essentials of his day. A baby’s crib and the intimate arrangement of the room complicate her image of the host without diminishing the mission’s danger.
She connects the Data Plug to his handset and initiates a Data Surge. The process floods her with information and sensations, while the device can be used only once and its transmission may be detected.
Intelligence through the body
The extraction turns her physical person into the route by which hidden material reaches the agency. Its potential value is enormous, but the operation leaves her vulnerable and temporarily disoriented.
The Recovery

The Last Leg
Escape toward a signal
Wounded and alone, the narrator pilots a hidden speedboat toward a designated recovery area. She holds the emergency button behind her knee and struggles to remain conscious as pain competes with navigation.
At the Hotspot she waits in darkness, uncertain when relief will arrive. Her survival depends on obeying a rule that offers no immediate comfort or visible assurance.
Recovered, not restored
A helicopter finally descends, and human rescuers appear above her. The mission’s immediate crisis ends, but the altered life she must re-enter is only beginning.
