Aid as moral accounting
Alexander’s money appears to answer Ilana’s appeal, but he refuses to apologize or acknowledge the full injury. Michel insists that payment alone cannot settle the matter.
An incomplete repair
The transfers change material conditions without restoring trust. The gap between financial compensation and forgiveness drives the correspondence.
Michel’s Sermon

Michel’s Sermon
Moral correction
Michel rebukes Boaz for violence and frames self-restraint as the path toward adulthood and Jewish responsibility. He presents his own acceptance of Alexander’s money as a victory over pride.
The contradiction exposed
His humility coexists with a desire to direct Boaz’s life. The novel shows how repentance language can become another instrument of authority.
A Letter of Condemnation

A Letter of Condemnation
Michel demands repair
After Boaz attacks his employer, Michel argues that the boy must apologize and change. He condemns Alexander’s past while claiming that he accepted the money for Boaz’s good.
Forgiveness with conditions
The letter offers a path back into the family, but only if Boaz accepts Michel’s moral account. Its care and coercion remain difficult to separate.
Alexander’s Confession

Alexander’s Confession
Acknowledging wrongdoing
Alexander tells Michel that his past conduct was hateful and vindictive. He recognizes Michel as a good man and apologizes for the pain his existence continues to cause.
Repentance without conversion
He does not adopt Michel’s faith or politics. His apology is meaningful precisely because it is an admission rather than a demand for absolution.
Forgiveness at the Threshold

Forgiveness at the Threshold
Michel changes course
After learning that Alexander is dying, Michel retracts his accusations and invites him to Jerusalem for treatment. He promises prayer and care rather than punishment.
Mercy remains uncertain
His forgiveness does not resolve their political disagreement or erase the past. It creates a brief opening in which suffering makes compassion possible.
