Hawaii
Black BoxHawaii appears in Michel Sommo’s letter to Alexander Gideon as a screen-mediated place of escape: a setting for television detectives, an imagined new home, and finally a destination to which Gideon might flee rather than answer Michel. Its significance lies less in any description of the islands than in the way Michel uses the name to expose the distance between easy fictional resolutions and the painful choices facing the people in his letter.
A refuge seen on television
Returning to his empty home, Michel pours brandy left by his brother and watches detectives pursue a criminal in Hawaii. He leaves the television before the chase concludes, unwilling to accept its entertainment as a favor to him; when he comes back inside, the program has reached a happy ending. The contrast makes Hawaii part of a world where danger is neatly resolved, while Michel remains alone with the shame and grief he is trying to articulate.
An imagined escape
After the television’s happy ending, Michel wonders whether he should take his little girl and live in Hawaii. The suggestion is speculative, not a report of travel or a settled plan. Its abruptness conveys the reach of his desperation: faced with an empty home and a life he cannot straighten out, he momentarily imagines leaving for a far-off place associated with the television’s uncomplicated resolution.
A recurring figure of flight
Later in the letter, Hawaii expands from Michel’s possible refuge into an accusation and a joke. In a bitter religious question, he wonders whether God has moved there; the thought gives geographical form to his sense that divine justice is absent from his present life. Near the letter’s end, as Michel arranges for a taxi to carry his message and bring back Gideon’s answer, he says he has done so to keep Gideon from getting up and running off to Hawaii. The repeated reference thus turns escape into a pointed contrast: Michel insists that Gideon face the choice before him, even as Hawaii remains the name both men can use to imagine getting away.
