Injured Pilot
A Broken Leg
Michael Durant regained consciousness inside Super 64 with a fractured femur and a damaged aircraft around him. He initially believed rescue had arrived when Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon appeared.
The Situation Reverses
He soon learned that the two commandos were the entire immediate rescue force. As the defense collapsed, his hope of quick evacuation gave way to the prospect of capture.
A Hostage Changes Hands

Taken into Mogadishu
From Mob to Captors
Durant was dragged away after the crash site was overrun. Yousuf Dahir Mo'Alim initially protected him from the crowd, but armed bandits took the injured pilot from Mo'Alim's group.
A Political Bargain
The captors treated Durant as a hostage whose release could bring leverage or payment. He was chained and moved to a room, uncertain whether his captors would protect him or kill him.
Survival and Release

A Captive’s Small Choices
Enduring Injury
Durant endured pain, fear, interrogation, and poor medical conditions. Firimbi later helped care for him, and Durant used conversation and cooperation to maintain a measure of trust.
Return to American Control
Negotiations led to Durant's release. He returned alive but carried uncertainty about the fate of the crew and defenders who had tried to protect him.
