A Captive Changes Custody

A New Protector
From Bandits to Aidid’s Representative
After armed men took Durant from Yousuf Dahir Mo'Alim's group, the pilot was transferred to people aligned with Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Abdullahi Hassan, known as Firimbi, became responsible for his care.
A Human Obligation
Firimbi had been warned that he would suffer if Durant were harmed. His responsibility was political, but it also became personal as he tended the injured prisoner.
Care in Captivity

A Relationship Takes Shape
Daily Dependence
Firimbi helped clean and bandage Durant and tried to meet his needs. Durant, in pain and unable to leave, learned to engage his captor through conversation and small acts of cooperation.
Shared Habits
Firimbi included Durant in gestures such as dividing khat, even when the inclusion was partly playful. These interactions made captivity more human without erasing the imbalance of power.
Release and Promise

A Political Bargain
Oakley’s Intervention
Robert Oakley pressed Aidid's clan for Durant's release and warned of the consequences of renewed fighting. Firimbi's role in protecting the pilot remained connected to this negotiation.
A Promise to Remember
Durant had promised to describe his treatment honestly after release. His relationship with Firimbi revealed that care and political strategy could coexist during a hostage crisis.
