V. I. Warshawski is left to die at Dead Stick Pond
Blood ShotV. I. Warshawski’s attack at Dead Stick Pond is a failed attempt to leave her for dead, and its importance sharpens when she later connects it to Nancy Cleghorn’s killing. The attack also forms part of a continuing pattern of threats: after surviving it, Warshawski reports that two of the same men waited outside her apartment.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
Five days before discussing her danger with Murray Ryerson, Warshawski had been attacked and abandoned at Dead Stick Pond. The account establishes the severity of what happened without detailing the assault; its immediate consequence is clear in her assessment that the threat against her is real.
That danger did not end at the pond. Warshawski tells Murray that two of the same men later waited outside her apartment. The attack thus belongs to an ongoing campaign of intimidation, rather than standing as an isolated encounter.
Connection to Nancy Cleghorn’s Killing
During a later confrontation with Steve Dresberg, Warshawski accuses him of having tried to kill her in the same way he killed Nancy Cleghorn. The accusation gives the Dead Stick Pond attack a larger significance: it is presented as a repetition of the method used against Nancy, linking the threats against Warshawski to the murder investigation.
Dresberg does not turn his attention directly to Warshawski. Instead, he threatens Louisa Djiak with a gun while Warshawski continues to challenge him. The confrontation places the earlier attack within a wider pattern of danger to people around the investigation, while the evidence here leaves the Dead Stick Pond assault’s details and immediate circumstances unstated.
