Maren gives Travis’s car to Kayla

Bones & All

Maren gives Travis’s black sedan to Kayla after taking it from Travis’s home and driving to Tingley in search of Lee. The exchange joins an uneasy flight with a concrete gift: Maren has made the car her means of travel, but she passes it on because Lee wanted Kayla to have a car. Her insistence that Kayla not ask whose car it is leaves the gift generous but deliberately shadowed by an unresolved question of ownership.

From Travis’s House to the Road

Before setting out, Maren searches Travis’s room for money. His clothes are too large for her, and the cash is not where she expects it: she finds seven hundred dollars rolled into the toe of an old leather shoe in the closet. The amount and hiding place make the departure materially specific. Maren is not travelling with secure resources; she takes the money she finds and also has a new backpack from the closet, while the car gives her a way to continue toward Tingley.

The drive is made possible by the experience she has gained in a pickup truck. Travis’s car is easier to drive than that truck, but Maren is still travelling without a license. She works out how to pump gas, keeps to the speed limit, and feels relief whenever a state police car passes. These careful details put the later handover in context: the car has become both a practical instrument of escape and an exposure to being stopped. At night, she parks in a public park away from a campsite and sleeps curled in the backseat beneath a scratchy wool blanket from the trunk.

Finding Kayla

Maren’s immediate purpose is to find Lee, but by the time she reaches Tingley she realizes she does not know his last name. She goes instead to the high school, open during summer recess, where a secretary calls Kayla and lets Maren speak to her. The route to the gift therefore begins with an improvised search for Lee and depends on Kayla’s recognition of Maren from an earlier encounter at her aunt’s house.

Kayla meets Maren in the parking lot of Halliday’s Ice Cream Parlor with a double scoop of peanut butter fudge and sits in the passenger seat. Their talk first establishes Kayla’s own progress toward driving: she has passed her test using a friend’s truck, and Lee had prepared her by having her practise parallel parking in a pickup. When Kayla notices that Maren has driven there too, Maren admits that she has no license. She credits Lee as a good teacher, connecting the journey to the skill he taught her even as Kayla’s discovery underscores the risk Maren has taken.

The Handover

After Kayla finishes her ice cream, Maren tells her the other reason she has returned to Tingley. Lee had wanted Kayla to have a car, Maren explains, and she wants Kayla to have this one. Kayla stares at her, surprised. The gesture gives practical form to Lee’s wish in his absence: Maren does not simply relay his intention but puts a vehicle within Kayla’s reach.

The gift comes with a task. Kayla is to get Lee to replace the plates the next time he is home. That detail makes the car’s transfer conditional on a future encounter with Lee and on his involvement in making it usable for Kayla. Maren, who has driven it there, does not describe a formal transfer or explain how the car came into her hands; she makes the offer and leaves the plate change for Kayla and Lee to arrange.

Secrecy, Care, and What Follows

Maren draws a firm boundary around the car’s history. She asks Kayla not to ask whose car it was and says she did not steal it, insisting that this is all Kayla needs to know. The denial does not resolve the question; its force comes from the fact that Maren anticipates it and limits what may be asked. The gift is thus both an act of care and a piece of concealment. Kayla can accept the car without being given an account of its previous owner or Maren’s circumstances.

The following morning, Kayla offers Maren a place to stay until Lee returns, saying her mother would not mind; their mother has not been home since Maren arrived. The offer extends the encounter beyond the car and creates a possible pause in Maren’s movement, though the evidence does not establish whether she accepts or how long she stays. The scene leaves the vehicle with Kayla and the larger reunion still pending. In that unsettled ending, Maren’s gift is a temporary connection among the three: Lee’s wish motivates it, Kayla receives it, and Maren carries out the handover while keeping her own account withheld.
