Written on my heart

Bones & All

Written on my heart is a metaphor for the people Maren carries within her sense of self. Its meaning turns from apparent absence to an attachment she cannot undo: after Lee’s name joins the names already written there, the image holds tenderness and guilt together.

The Image of Absence

After leaving Travis’s house, Maren showers and looks at herself in the mirror as though she were somebody else, somebody with no names written on her heart. The image belongs to a moment of flight and estrangement: she believes she can see herself as separate from the ties that might define her, and declares herself done pretending to be normal. The heart becomes an imagined record of connection, even when she thinks that record is blank.

Lee’s Name

The image returns after Maren wakes to find Lee gone and recognizes what she has done. She remembers that his embrace had made the darkness inside her seem to disappear and thinks that Lee had made her pure and let her do it; she also wishes he had not. The thought that his name is written there too reverses the earlier image of emptiness. Lee has become part of what Maren carries, and the added name does not resolve her guilt: it binds her sense of intimacy and purification to the act she cannot deny.
