Samson Woodford and Ricky

Box Set: Samsons Sterbliche Geliebte & Samson's Lovely Mortal (Deutsch·Englisch) (Scanguards Vampire) (German Edition)

Samson Woodford and Ricky share a friendship built into both their personal lives and their work at Scanguards. Ricky can tease Samson, plan a surprise for him, and answer his call when danger strikes; Samson, in turn, speaks to Ricky with the directness of someone accustomed to being heard. Their closeness is not without friction: a birthday scheme intended as a celebration becomes a breach of confidence, revealing the limits of their otherwise easy familiarity.

Friendship and Familiarity

Ricky’s ease with Samson appears in the way he greets him on his birthday. Calling shortly before nine in the evening, Ricky opens with a joking question whose phrasing immediately makes Samson wince. Samson knows the call is not simply a birthday wish: he has already guessed that his friends are planning a surprise party and asks when they will arrive. Ricky initially maintains the pretense, then gives away the plan by telling Samson to stay home and to keep their other surprise there if she arrives first. The exchange makes their familiarity legible through rhythm rather than ceremony: Ricky tries to preserve the surprise, while Samson cuts through the act and asks for the practical details.

The joke also reflects a difference between what Ricky considers playful and what Samson actually wants. Samson says plainly that he is not interested in strippers, but Ricky presses him to give the woman a chance and invokes advice from Holly, Ricky’s girlfriend. The birthday plan therefore carries affection and presumption at once. Ricky and the other friends have organized something for Samson, yet they assume that a surprise he dislikes might still do him good. Samson’s angry response shows that intimacy does not erase his right to set a boundary.

Work at Scanguards

Their connection also has an institutional dimension. Ricky works for Samson at Scanguards, where he is responsible for recruiting vampires. Samson is not involved in every day-to-day decision, but he reviews important reports and steps in when problems grow beyond the routine. Ricky’s position places him among the trusted colleagues whose responsibilities support the organization, while their friendship coexists with those professional roles.

The arrangement is not presented as frictionless: Samson’s broader circle of friends sometimes overlaps with the workplace, and the narration observes that friendship does not interfere with work most of the time. That qualification matters. Their personal familiarity can inform cooperation, but it does not make the professional relationship disappear. Ricky is not only the friend who calls with a birthday joke; he is also an employee with a defined function in Samson’s company.

The Birthday Breach

The most pointed conflict between the two concerns confidence. When Ricky mentions that Holly knows about Samson’s private problem, Samson reacts with anger and asks why Ricky told her after he had confided in him. The dispute sharpens when Ricky defends Holly as neither a gossip nor the source of the suggestion: she proposed the stripper, who is a friend of hers. Ricky’s explanation does not settle the question Samson is raising. His objection is not just to the party’s entertainment but to the circulation of personal information he believed he had entrusted to Ricky privately.

Even in anger, the scene shows how close the friends are. Samson does not disguise his outrage or withdraw into formal politeness; he confronts Ricky directly. His fangs protrude as his nostrils flare, but Ricky is not easily frightened. The physical intensity of Samson’s reaction and Ricky’s ability to stand his ground create a comic contrast, while the underlying issue remains serious: Ricky’s attempt to enlist help has exposed Samson’s confidence to another person without his permission.

Humor, Loyalty, and Limits

The surprise turns into public embarrassment when Samson mistakes the arriving woman for the stripper Ricky’s group arranged. His friends watch as she slaps him, and Ricky asks what Samson is doing. Samson retorts that he is enjoying the stripper Ricky provided; the woman immediately protests that she is not a stripper. The misidentification gives the birthday plan a farcical consequence, but it also leaves Ricky in the middle of the misunderstanding his own scheme helped create. Their banter survives the moment, though the scene does not show Samson withdrawing his objection to the plan.

Ricky’s role extends beyond teasing. When Samson and Delilah are attacked outside the theater, Samson calls Ricky and tells him what has happened. The call is brief, but its placement matters: in an emergency, Ricky is among the people Samson contacts. The birthday episode tests the friendship through a careless disclosure, while the attack places it within a network of practical reliance. Together, these moments present a friendship with room for humor and blunt confrontation, but one whose trust depends on respecting the difference between helping Samson and deciding for him.
