Father Ryland
Bride of AlvarFather Ryland is a priest of Underland whose importance reaches beyond ritual. He blesses the wedding feast of Lucy Hammond and Alvar, serves as a respected keeper of magical secrets, and possesses specialized knowledge about Cursed blood and pregnancy. Through these functions, he helps bind together the kingdom’s religious traditions, political legitimacy, and efforts to prevent the destructive consequences of the Cursed state.
Identity and Religious Authority
Father Ryland appears at the wedding celebration as a recognized religious figure. When the priest rises and asks whether he may bless the feast, Alvar welcomes him as “good Father Ryland” and says he is glad that Ryland arrived. Ryland answers that he would do anything for the king who restored peace and light to Axus. His presence therefore gives the marriage a public and sacred dimension: the union is not merely a political arrangement or a private agreement, but an event witnessed and blessed within Underland’s religious order.
His authority is also connected with Elias, the God of Light. The original Earth–Axus marriage agreement is sworn under oath to Elias and identifies Lucy Hammond as the unborn child promised to Alvar as a future wife and queen. Father Ryland’s role in the wedding places him within the same religious framework that validates the treaty. The ceremony’s blessing consequently reinforces the agreement’s claims of divine seriousness, even though the marriage also carries unmistakable diplomatic and coercive pressures.
Keeper of Magical Knowledge
Father Ryland is described as the kingdom’s greatest keeper of magical secrets. Alvar identifies him as one of the record keepers consulted while researching the dangers of Cursed pregnancies, and specifically names him as a source whose information helped confirm that Lucy would not necessarily die if she bore Alvar’s children. This makes Ryland an institutional custodian of knowledge that is both arcane and politically vital. The question of whether Alvar can have heirs without killing their mother affects not only a marriage but also the future of the Underland monarchy.
Ryland’s knowledge contrasts with Alvar’s earlier ignorance. Alvar admits that he did not understand how Cursed pregnancies worked when Triss became pregnant, and he accepts responsibility for her death because she had no Cursed blood and he conceived a child with her. Later research, including Ryland’s records, gives him a more precise understanding of the condition. Father Ryland thus participates in a movement from fear and inherited stigma toward investigation, classification, and attempted control, although the danger remains morally and physically grave.
Healing and the Earth–Axus Treaty
Father Ryland’s expertise becomes directly consequential when Sola Brightfeather tells Alvar that Hannah Delaney is carrying a child who is dying in the womb. Sola instructs Alvar to cross the Bridge while it remains open, infuse Cursed blood into the unborn child, and use healing magic to save it; she adds that Father Ryland knows how to perform the procedure and will accompany Alvar. Ryland is therefore not simply a commentator on magical medicine. He is positioned as the person capable of translating hidden knowledge into a lifesaving intervention.
That intervention creates the foundation for the Earth–Axus marriage agreement. Alvar’s blood saves Lucy Hammond before her birth, and the agreement made with Hannah Delaney promises Lucy as Alvar’s future bride and queen in exchange for peace between Earth and the realms of Axus. Father Ryland’s expertise consequently lies at the origin of a political relationship that later becomes a marriage. The same sacred and medical knowledge that preserves one life is folded into diplomacy, dynastic succession, and the obligation imposed on Lucy from before birth.
Knowledge, Risk, and Narrative Role
Father Ryland’s position reveals how Underland treats the Cursed state as a problem requiring several kinds of authority at once. Cursed blood can be associated with violence and danger, yet it is also the medium through which healing occurs. Pregnancy can become a magical crisis, yet records and disciplined study offer a means of understanding it. Religion does not stand apart from these practical concerns: Ryland’s role joins divine blessing, secret knowledge, and medical action in a single institutional figure.
His importance remains indirect but durable. He is not shown dominating the political debates surrounding Alvar’s return as king, but his earlier knowledge helps establish that Alvar’s future heirs may be possible, while later succession tradition requires an heir to reach twenty-five before the council judges whether that person is worthy to succeed. By supporting the knowledge that makes succession conceivable, Father Ryland contributes to the monarchy’s continuity without deciding the succession himself.
Father Ryland also helps distinguish legitimate Underland authority from the violent systems surrounding it. Goblia’s religious order under Remora permits female infants to be destroyed unless selected for succession, while male drones commonly die in infancy; Saul helped install and preserve this arrangement to weaken the gobli city. Against that brutal manipulation of religion and heredity, Ryland represents a different use of sacred authority: blessing a union, preserving knowledge, and helping save a child. The narrative does not make him the sole source of moral certainty, but it places his religious and magical office among the forces that allow survival, lawful continuity, and the possibility of peace.
