The Savoy
Bridget Jones: Mad About the BoyThe Savoy frames a meeting where professional hope and social performance unfold over tea. For Bridget Jones, Ambergris’s praise of her screenplay briefly makes it seem that her own voice is about to reach the screen, though the conversation’s warmth sits alongside anxieties about the project’s prospects.
The Screenwriting Meeting
Bridget meets Ambergris at The Savoy to discuss her script. Before Ambergris arrives, Bridget imagines her entering in a polished, conspicuously stylish outfit, partly so Bridget can observe how to present herself and be admired alongside her. Instead, Ambergris slips into the booth in grey sweats and a baseball cap, overturning the image Bridget had anticipated.
The meeting begins with a ritual of mutual compliments familiar to Bridget from women in the movie business. Ambergris praises Bridget’s outfit, while Bridget tries to return the compliment by describing Ambergris’s sweats as sporty. The exchange establishes a lightly awkward social negotiation before the conversation turns to the screenplay.
Tea and Social Performance
An enormous tea arrives on a three-tier cake stand. Ambergris takes a tiny smoked-salmon sandwich and toys with it through the conversation; Bridget, by contrast, eats the entire bottom layer of sandwiches, three scones with jam and clotted cream, miniature tarts and pastries, and drinks both free glasses of champagne. The contrast makes the meeting’s polished setting an occasion for Bridget’s characteristic lack of restraint as well as professional conversation.
Praise and Doubt
Ambergris expresses awe at Bridget’s script, places a hand on Bridget’s, and says, “I feel humbled.” The praise sends Bridget’s spirits soaring, and she imagines that her voice is finally coming to the fore. Yet the meeting also touches on doubts about Dougie: Ambergris shares anxieties about him with Imogen, while Bridget brushes past the concern that he needs the opportunity and has not made anything anyone has heard of. The Savoy scene thus gives Bridget encouragement without resolving the doubts surrounding the project.
