Harley Street

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Harley Street serves as the setting for a small but telling transition: Bridget Jones goes there for a Botox treatment and emerges into the street to encounter Woney. The location links a private cosmetic procedure, approached with apprehension, to an unplanned social meeting in public.

The Botox Appointment

Bridget descends into a basement clinic off Harley Street, feeling as though she is entering a back-street abortionist’s premises. The treatment is focused on her mouth, and the doctor warns that without it her face may droop into a miserable expression. After the procedure, Bridget comes back out into the light, blinking and grimacing as instructed.

An Encounter Outside

Across the road, Bridget notices Woney and is startled when Woney hurries over. The encounter shifts attention from Bridget’s altered facial expressions to Woney’s changed appearance: her hair is longer and dark brown rather than grey, and she wears a fitted peach dress and high heels instead of her usual high-necked dress. Harley Street thus frames a brief juxtaposition between Bridget’s visit for cosmetic treatment and Woney’s striking transformation, without establishing how or where Woney achieved it.
