Simple Job, Bad Omen

Simple Job, Bad Omen
Maria’s instructions
Maria tells Nanao to take a suitcase from the Hayate and get off at Ueno. She withholds the details, reasoning that a simple job needs little explanation.
Nanao expects trouble because every assignment seems to go wrong. His anticipation is funny at first, but it also establishes how strongly he expects misfortune to shape his choices.
The Stop He Misses

The Stop He Misses
A blocked exit
Nanao finds the suitcase but meets the Wolf as the doors open at Ueno. The Wolf forces his way into the train, and Nanao loses the chance to disembark.
Their confrontation ends with the Wolf’s accidental death when a fall breaks his neck. Nanao must hide the body and remain aboard, turning the first missed stop into a much larger crisis.
Choosing to Stay

Choosing to Stay
A reluctant commitment
Nanao could leave the train at Sendai, but he stays because the suitcase has disappeared and may still be aboard. Later, after further violence, he says he will give up and hand the case to a conductor.
The decision does not end his involvement: Tangerine needs him at the next crisis, and the Prince’s threats implicate Wataru. Nanao’s repeated wish to escape gradually gives way to protecting someone vulnerable.
