A Life of Setbacks

A Life of Setbacks
The misfortune story
Nanao recalls a mistaken kidnapping, an examination ruined by another student’s sneeze, and countless ordinary reversals. He has come to regard bad luck as a permanent feature of his life.
His belief both protects and constrains him: expecting failure helps him prepare, but also makes each new setback feel inevitable. Maria sees his nerves; Nanao sees accumulated evidence.
The Train Fights Back

The Train Fights Back
Improvisation under pressure
Nanao loses his exit, accidentally kills the Wolf, hides the body, and loses track of the suitcase. Each problem confirms his sense that the assignment is cursed, yet he keeps adapting rather than surrendering.
He knocks Lemon unconscious and constructs distractions to evade Tangerine. His competence becomes clearest at precisely the moments when his confidence is lowest.
A Different Kind of Luck

A Different Kind of Luck
Survival without certainty
Nanao survives the poison-needle encounter with Hornet’s partner and continues toward Morioka, though the snake, missed exits, and violence keep undermining his sense of control.
Later, he wins a supermarket prize of oranges and lemons. The modest victory does not erase his history, but it lets him imagine that misfortune may not be the only force shaping his life.
