Hayate–Komachi Shinkansen
Bullet TrainThe Hayate–Komachi Shinkansen is the moving setting for Nanao’s journey and for Tangerine and Lemon’s search aboard the train. Its reserved seating makes Nanao’s exit plan concrete, while the boundary between its Hayate and Komachi sections limits how far the search can reach.
Arrival and Boarding
At the platform, a loudspeaker announces the imminent arrival of the Morioka-bound Hayate–Komachi Shinkansen on track 20. The announcement reverberates across the station and makes it difficult for Nanao to hear Maria on the phone; when she checks whether he can hear her, he tells her the train is coming. The train’s arrival interrupts their conversation with the immediate practical demands of boarding.
Once aboard, Nanao checks his ticket: car four, row one, seat D. Maria has reserved the seat early because the train is all reserved seating and he will need to get off quickly. She has chosen an aisle seat to make his exit easier. The seat assignment turns the train’s orderly reservation system into part of Nanao’s plan for a brief journey: retrieve the suitcase and leave at the next stop.
The Hayate–Komachi Division
The train’s joined sections create a boundary that matters during the search. Tangerine realizes he cannot see all the way to the end of the train. He and Lemon have noticed an unfamiliar man in a flat cap standing by the door to car five or six, but the sighting does not tell them what is happening farther ahead. Tangerine explains that everything beyond car eleven belongs to the Komachi, which is bound for Akita; although it is connected to their Hayate, passengers cannot pass between the two sections.
This physical separation narrows the area in which Tangerine and Lemon can look for the thief. Tangerine doubts the thief is in the cars beyond the boundary, and Lemon’s response is less a resolution than an acknowledgment that trains can be confusing. The train’s coupled construction therefore offers connection in appearance but not in access: the Komachi travels alongside the Hayate, yet remains unavailable to their search.
Departure and Return Aboard
Music on the platform signals departure. A handful of people board, but nobody gets off, leaving Tangerine and Lemon without a useful opportunity to continue looking from the platform. They return to the train, and the Shinkansen begins moving up a gradual slope toward daylight. A tinkling version of the departure music plays inside as well, carrying the platform’s signal into the carriage.
Lemon whistles along on his way back to his seat, but the mood changes when he sees Little Minegishi propped against the window. The sight brings the pair back to the unpleasant matter they still have to deal with. The train has resumed its journey, while the unresolved task remains with them inside it.
