Minegishi–daughter father–daughter relationship

Bullet Train

Minegishi–daughter father–daughter relationship is introduced through the Prince’s account of Minegishi’s family and becomes central to his plan to pressure Minegishi. The Prince describes Minegishi as devoted to his young daughter, and treats that affection as a potential weakness; the account establishes the relationship’s importance to the scheme, but does not show how Minegishi would actually respond to a threat against her.

Family Circumstances

The Prince says that Minegishi visits his daughter from his mistress once a month. He contrasts her with Minegishi’s son by his wife: the son is the heir, but the Prince characterizes him as stupid, selfish, and useless. By contrast, he describes the daughter as a little child whom Minegishi dotes on. These details are presented as the Prince’s understanding of Minegishi’s family, rather than as an independent account of either child or their relationship with him.

Affection as a Vulnerability

The Prince reasons that people are especially vulnerable when their children are at risk, and uses Minegishi’s apparent affection for his daughter to identify a way to reach him. He plans to go to Morioka to meet Minegishi and believes that putting the daughter’s safety in question could make Minegishi less likely to act rashly. The girl is not involved in the conversation; her relationship with Minegishi is invoked as leverage in a plan devised by the Prince.

Doubt and Moral Stakes

Kimura responds with anger at the prospect of an innocent child being harmed, but also questions whether Minegishi would expose himself on her behalf. The Prince estimates only a twenty-per-cent chance that the tactic will work, yet considers the possibility useful because the threat could constrain Minegishi’s choices. The exchange therefore leaves the relationship’s actual effect unresolved: Minegishi’s affection is the basis of the Prince’s calculation, while the anticipated response remains untested.
