Tokyo

Bullet Train

Tokyo is both an urban setting and an information hub in the novel: Momo’s modest adult bookstore operates there as a discreet exchange point for the underworld, carrying news that reaches operators involved in the train’s events and in Minegishi’s wider plans.

Setting and Information Hub

Momo runs a hole-in-the-wall adult bookstore in Tokyo, with print magazines ranging from mildly suggestive material to hardcore pornography. Its regular customers keep the shop in business, though sales are never especially strong. Its greater importance lies in its other function: people from the criminal underworld visit to trade information, making the shop a central node in a network that deals in intelligence as well as merchandise.

Connections Beyond the City

Tangerine and Lemon sometimes buy information from Momo and sometimes sell it to her. When Momo contacts Tangerine, she passes along word that Minegishi is trying to gather people in Sendai and Morioka. The call turns the Tokyo shop into a conduit between the city’s information network and developments elsewhere; Tangerine responds with jokes before asking whether Momo knows the man who works for Maria, whom she identifies as Ladybug.

Place in the Train Plot

A separate exchange about the suitcase refers to a player being unable to get off at Ueno and instead getting off at Omiya, with the client kept informed of the change. These station details place the suitcase’s movement within the rail journey associated with Tokyo, while Momo’s shop shows how the city’s criminal world tracks and interprets events unfolding along that route. Tokyo’s significance is therefore less a matter of a single dramatic incident than of its role as a point of contact: information travels from the shop toward the people whose plans and movements shape the action.
