Useful trains

Bullet Train

Useful trains is a phrase Lemon and Tangerine apply to themselves when they consider why others might keep them alive: both may know something about what happened to Minegishi’s son. Its two appearances connect a grim calculation about survival with the possibility that Lemon has abandoned his job, making usefulness sound at once like protection and a duty he cannot simply leave behind.

A Bargain for Survival

When Lemon agrees that he and Tangerine are useful trains, the phrase answers a specific danger. They reason that, because they may have some idea what happened to Minegishi’s son, they cannot be killed immediately. Lemon first accepts that logic, then unsettles it by adding that, in the same circumstances, he would kill himself or Tangerine. The phrase therefore offers no secure promise of safety: it names a temporary value that might delay violence, while Lemon’s qualification keeps the threat in view.

Usefulness and Loyalty

Later, Nanao wonders whether Lemon got off at Sendai because he had grown tired of the job. Tangerine quietly rejects the suggestion, saying Lemon wants to be a useful train. The expression now describes more than the pair’s potential knowledge; Tangerine invokes it to explain why Lemon would not simply walk away. The repeated metaphor gives practical usefulness the force of a personal commitment, though the evidence leaves open whether that commitment will protect either man.
