Kayla Morrison and Jessica Cooper's employer-assistant relationship

Call Me Yours

Kayla Morrison and Jessica Cooper's employer-assistant relationship is both Kayla Renae Morrison’s most important professional dependency and the channel through which a concealed scheme reaches her home, money, and safety. Jessica is not simply an assistant: she manages Kayla’s personal life as well as her work, and Kayla’s confidence in her allows her to remain close while hiding theft and a plan to take Kayla’s property.

A Relationship Built on Dependence

Kayla Renae Morrison is a business tycoon and socialite whose wealth and tightly managed household make practical competence essential. She considers dismissing Jessica after a crisis but decides against it because Jessica is exceptionally good at the job. Jessica handles business emergencies, manages Kayla’s home and personal affairs, deals with Kayla’s daughter Adi when she misbehaves, and acts as Kayla’s publicist, keeping damaging stories out of the press. Kayla’s trust is therefore grounded in a broad record of delegated responsibility: Jessica has access to the private and public sides of her employer’s life.

That confidence is not merely professional courtesy. When Detective Quentin asks whether she trusts her assistant, Kayla answers yes and wants to end the questioning. She insists that Jessica would never steal from her. The strength of this certainty stands in sharp contrast to what the reader later learns: the person entrusted with Kayla’s household and personal affairs is also the person positioned to exploit that access.

Authority Inside the Household

The assistant’s unusual authority is reflected in the structure of Morrison Villa. Kayla employs seven staff members—a chauffeur, two butlers, two cooks, and two maids—but Jessica is the only one who lives on the property. She has worked for Kayla for a decade. The distinction gives Jessica an intimacy with the household that the other employees do not share, while also making her Kayla’s principal intermediary with the rest of the staff.

Kayla’s rules define that intermediary role in detail. The draperies must remain down; employees may not leave once their shifts begin; they may speak directly to Kayla only when she addresses them first; and complaints must go through Jessica, who is expected to handle them. Staff are also forbidden to befriend Adi. A confidentiality contract bars interviews with the press or sharing anything seen or heard inside the mansion. These restrictions place Jessica between Kayla and the people who work in her home: she is expected to enforce the boundaries even as she alone enjoys resident access. The arrangement concentrates information and responsibility in the assistant Kayla trusts most.

The Trust Tested by Separation and Suspicion

The relationship also follows Kayla beyond the mansion. During a trip that takes her to Sweden and then London for hotel employee events, Jessica accompanies her. Kayla visits branches of the Morrison Group of Hotels, but her thoughts are occupied by Chris; she writes him a letter each day. The episode still establishes Jessica as part of the machinery of Kayla’s work and travel, present during an extended absence from home as well as in its daily routines.

When paintings go missing from the mansion, Kayla continues to defend Jessica. She tells Quentin that she would never suspect her assistant, even though the theft is puzzling and the hallway has no security camera because Adi finds one uncomfortable. Later, Kayla relocates her family to a hotel for safety while the investigation has gone cold. Jessica does not contact the insurance company, fearing that its representatives will come to the house and intrude into the matter. She recognizes that she is the only person who knows how much the paintings are worth. When Kayla asks whether she took them, Jessica denies it without looking at her. The exchange places Kayla’s confidence beside Jessica’s concealed knowledge, making the apparent loyalty increasingly precarious.

Concealment, Coercion, and the Relationship’s Rupture

Jessica’s hidden conduct extends beyond the paintings. In a secret study behind a wardrobe, Jamie finds a notebook in which she has written a plan to get rid of Kayla, take her money and properties, and transfer the deeds into her own name. The scheme makes the assistant’s access to Kayla’s home and affairs a source of danger, not just a mark of trust. Don later uses what he knows about Jessica’s theft to threaten disclosure to Kayla; he also threatens to tell her husband, Jamie, that she is having affairs. Jessica denies the affair and begs Don to leave them alone, offering him one million dollars. Don refuses the offer as inadequate, saying he expects twice as much when Kayla is dead. Her attempt to pay him shows how the concealed relationship has become entangled with coercion and the prospect of Kayla’s murder.

Jessica later gives Jamie a different account of the theft’s purpose. She says she wanted money for his treatment, feared Kayla would refuse a loan and investigate her past, and took the opportunity to steal while working for Kayla. She also says she stayed close to Kayla so she could remain close to Jamie and keep an eye on him. This explanation supplies a personal motive without undoing the evidence of the notebook’s separate, explicit plan against Kayla and her property. The relationship cannot be reduced either to uncomplicated loyalty or to a purely calculated betrayal: Jessica’s access is bound up with care for Jamie, but the method she chooses makes Kayla the target of secrecy, theft, and a scheme for control of her estate.

The strain becomes visible when Jessica enters Kayla’s office nervously and sits beside her; Kayla ignores her. Their earlier arrangement depended on Jessica’s competence and Kayla’s willingness to entrust her with nearly every part of domestic life. Once that trust is exposed as the means by which Jessica could conceal a crime, proximity no longer signifies confidence. The available scenes leave the relationship unresolved between them: Jessica explains herself to Jamie, while Kayla’s response to that eventual explanation is not shown.
