Six months
Call Me YoursSix months is the interval linking a new professional alliance for Jamie Cooper with a commission that becomes a test of his stalled creative life. The two events place renewed opportunity beside growing pressure: Ortiz Spencer takes over as Jamie’s agent, while Jamie’s promised comic-book illustrations remain unmade.
A New Agent
Six months before the events described, Jamie’s childhood friend Ortiz Spencer became his agent. The change followed a period in which Jamie’s friends and fans had deserted him and his previous agent had dropped him. Ortiz’s arrival therefore marks a personal connection taking the place of a professional relationship Jamie had lost, though the evidence does not establish that the change restored his career.
The Commission and the Missing Drawings
The same six-month interval also reaches back to a comic-book illustration commission. Jamie had spent the advance and could no longer tell Ortiz that he could not deliver the work. Drawing had once brought him fulfillment: he loved giving form to characters and took pleasure in seeing children’s stories illustrated by him. This commission, however, produced no sketches at all, making the gap between his attachment to art and his present inability to work especially stark.
The Interval’s Suspense
Later, Jamie tries to reach Ortiz after a postal truck arrives at the house. Because Ortiz is the only person Jamie expects might have sent him a package, the unanswered call heightens his uncertainty; he also wonders whether the package is for Jessica Cooper and remains troubled by his suspicion that she lied about the cost of her dress. When the phone rings back, Jamie answers with excitement. The passage leaves the call’s significance unresolved, but the six-month markers give that moment added weight: the agent is both the friend who took over after Jamie’s professional abandonment and the person connected to a commission Jamie has been unable to complete.
