Artemis Harrison
Can You Keep a SecretArtemis Harrison is a marketing executive at Panther Corporation, described by Paul as one of the department’s brightest young executives. During Jack Harper’s visit, she presents herself as polished and capable, but the performance also exposes the office’s anxious effort to appear at its best. Her spider plant becomes the focus of a quieter conflict: Artemis tends it carefully, unaware that Emma Corrigan has been secretly feeding it orange juice when irritated with her.
Identity and Introduction
Artemis works alongside Emma in Panther Corporation’s marketing department. Before Jack Harper arrives, Emma sees her redoing her lipstick at her desk and admiring herself in a hand mirror. Artemis notices Emma’s top and asks where it came from, a small exchange that places attention to appearance within the department’s everyday social life.
When Jack arrives, Paul introduces Artemis as one of the department’s brightest young marketing executives. Jack then approaches her workstation and remarks on the size of her desk, asking whether it is new. The exchange draws attention to the workspace as a visible marker of status, although the scene does not establish why Artemis has the desk or what Jack concludes about it.
Professional Performance
Cyril tells the staff to act normally while also working at their highest standards, instructing them to simulate the ordinary activity of a productive marketing department. The resulting display makes Artemis’s conduct part of a broader workplace performance. Before Jack’s arrival she had been on the phone to her mother; afterward, she puts on horn-rimmed glasses and types briskly, pausing to smile at what she has written as though pleased by her own brilliance.
Artemis also draws Emma into that performance by asking, in a falsely sweet manner, whether Emma has found a leaflet she had requested. Emma promptly rises and brings it to her desk, trying to look natural despite feeling watched and self-conscious. Artemis’s request is an ordinary piece of office business, but under Jack’s observation even a routine handover becomes a staged demonstration of competence.
The Spider Plant and Emma’s Resentment
Later, Artemis complains that she does not know what is wrong with her spider plant and says she waters it every day. She pokes at it, then turns to Jack and asks whether he knows about plants. When he says he does not, he asks Emma what she thinks could be wrong with it.
The exchange has an undisclosed explanation elsewhere in Emma’s account: when Artemis really annoys her, Emma feeds Artemis’s plant orange juice. Emma’s private retaliation makes Artemis’s diligent watering an ironic detail; Artemis tends the plant without knowing that her colleague is secretly interfering with it. The plant thus links their outwardly ordinary office interactions to Emma’s concealed hostility.
Narrative Role
Artemis is shown chiefly through Emma’s perspective and through brief, concrete workplace encounters rather than through an account of her private life. Her lipstick, mirror, glasses, brisk typing, and attention to the plant establish a colleague concerned with presentation and routine, but the evidence does not disclose her motives beyond what she says and does. The contrast between Artemis’s visible efforts to appear impressive and Emma’s hidden act against her plant helps reveal how scrutiny at work intensifies performance while leaving small resentments unspoken.
