A Lonely Marriage

A Lonely Marriage
Days divided between quiet and noise
Costas Arvanitis works at his smallholding and returns to a home ruled by routine, television, and his wife Stella’s complaints. The two share a house but little intimacy.
Desire has faded
Costas can barely remember the last time he touched Stella. Their marriage has continued for decades without conversation or the shared tenderness he once knew.
This emotional barrenness gives the buried discovery its power: the statue will awaken a capacity for feeling that Costas believes he has lost.
A Musical Ching

A Musical Ching
A sound unlike stone
Costas’s spade strikes something with a clear, bell-like note. He finds a pale surface beneath the earth but cannot yet understand what lies there.
A reason to return
The next morning he comes back with his tools and begins clearing the soil by hand, afraid that the spade might damage the object. His work in the garden gives way to curiosity.
The discovery draws his attention away from his ordinary life and toward an unknown form hidden beneath it.
A Body Emerges

A Body Emerges
Care replaces gardening
Costas uncovers the back, limbs, and fragments of a sculpted woman. He abandons the spade and uses his hands and a small brush, treating the buried figure with extraordinary gentleness.
Desire takes an impossible form
The marble body recalls a tenderness absent from his marriage. He becomes absorbed in the work and imagines the statue as Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.
His growing attachment is not reciprocated, but it gives his days a sense of purpose he has not felt for years.
The Face Revealed

The Face Revealed
The statue approaches wholeness
After days of painstaking work, Costas frees almost the entire sculpture. He covers it at night and speaks to it as if it were a beloved companion.
A glimpse changes everything
He attempts to turn the heavy statue alone and catches a momentary sight of its beautiful face. The exertion brings on severe chest pain as he lies beside it.
Beauty has revived his capacity for love, but it has also consumed his judgment and strength.
The Discovery Hidden Again

The Discovery Hidden Again
A friend makes a choice
Orestes finds Costas dead beside the statue. Knowing that its discovery could disrupt the village and its land, he decides not to alert authorities.
Love becomes a secret
Orestes reburies the sculpture and keeps a fragment of it with Costas, who is buried the following day. The village can continue its ordinary life without excavation or outside intervention.
Costas’s brief revival remains known only through the story Orestes and others later tell.
