California
Cat PersonCalifornia is the setting for two separate but resonant strands of the narrative: Jessica’s childhood connection to the Polly Klaas case and Taylor’s years in a destructive relationship with Gabriel. In both, the state becomes more than a backdrop. It is where private lives are caught up in events whose scale and meaning exceed what the characters can control.
Jessica and the Polly Klaas case
In September 1993, twelve-year-old Jessica lives in California after her family moves from San Jose to Santa Rosa. Three weeks before a man abducts Polly Klaas during a sleepover in Petaluma, Jessica encounters a stranger she associates with the Manson Family. The chronology places the girls’ experiences close together, though Jessica does not understand their connection at the time.
After Polly’s abduction, Jessica’s parents struggle to make sense of her account and eventually contact the police. During an interview, Jessica tells two officers about a cassette the stranger had given her; the officers retrieve it from her school backpack as evidence. The investigation unfolds amid a statewide search: more than four thousand people comb Sonoma County, while a black-and-white photograph of Polly is posted on walls, trees, and telephone poles throughout California.
When Polly is found in a shallow grave behind Highway 101, the discovery changes Jessica’s understanding of the encounter. The killer is an older man whose resemblance to Charlie on a flyer had been a trick of imagination or light. Jessica later concludes that the stranger had not been seeking her and had taken Polly instead, by coincidence. Even after recognizing that the events were not concretely connected, she continues to feel that a deeper force links what happened to Polly with what happened to her.
Taylor’s years in California
California also becomes the destination Taylor follows Gabriel to during their college years. After they break up in her final year of college, Gabriel leaves for the state; Taylor follows him and puts college aside when he agrees to reconcile. Lizzie later visits and reports signs that Taylor is struggling: she has lost ten pounds, drinks vodka tonics one after another, and has dark circles and bruises on her arm. Kath refuses Lizzie’s suggestion that they persuade Taylor to seek treatment, saying Taylor has made her choices.
The relationship continues through infidelity, suicide attempts, and police involvement before it finally ends. A decade later, Taylor is still in California, but appears to be doing much better: she has changed jobs, found a new analyst, and earned her degree. Lizzie reports that Taylor is seeing Ryan, possibly a producer, and Taylor announces that they are to marry. California thus holds both the period in which Taylor’s life narrowed around Gabriel and the later news that she has built a different future.
A geography of coincidence and distance
The California episodes are separated in time and plot, but each turns on the difficulty of interpreting what is happening from within it. Jessica mistakes proximity for a hidden connection between her encounter and Polly’s fate; Taylor’s friends receive only partial accounts of the life she is living with Gabriel. The state’s geography gives these stories concrete locations—from Petaluma and Sonoma County to Highway 101—while its distance from the characters’ other relationships helps shape what can be known, witnessed, and acted upon.
