Chasing Sunlight

Unflame is a dangerous expeditionary material associated with cold rather than ordinary flame, and Jonathan Heights carries it as one of the specialized substances intended to protect the Endeavor in the far east. Its practical value is inseparable from the moral and political anxieties surrounding it: to Jonathan, it is equipment that may solve an immediate survival problem; to Antomine, it belongs to the alien and corrupting powers that the Inquisition exists to contain.

Definition and Expeditionary Use

Unflame appears among the unusual materials Jonathan Heights has acquired for the Endeavor’s journey beyond the settled world. The ship’s cargo includes fire dust and unflame alongside a portable luminiferous terrestrite distillation apparatus, a lifting-gas separator, water equipment, searchlights, crew-served zint guns, spare parts, and provisions. This placement makes unflame part of a carefully assembled system of survival technologies rather than an incidental curiosity: Jonathan expects the expedition to travel for months or more than a year, to stop far from cities, and to face conditions in which ordinary resupply will be impossible.

Its most explicit operational property emerges during the encounter with the Glacilium. The enormous ice beings reduce the temperature inside the Endeavor merely by being present, while ice begins creeping across sensitive controls. Jonathan considers whether the remaining fire dust could hold the creature off, but also wonders whether an amphora of unflame would be better because of the creature’s clear affinity for cold. The suggestion is significant even though it is not tested: unflame is treated as a substance whose behavior may interact directly with the cold nature of the Glacilium, potentially offering a defense where conventional weapons would be inadequate.

A Forbidden Material

Unflame is not merely dangerous because it is difficult to handle. Antomine places it within a religious vocabulary of contamination and corruption. When Jonathan proposes using an alien fruit encountered in the east to help the crew survive Bitter Pass, Antomine rejects it as poison because of its antipathy to good and honest light. The same suspicion extends to the expedition’s stored materials: Antomine later identifies Jonathan’s fire dust and unflame as products capable of tremendous damage, together with the relics hidden in Jonathan’s cabin.

The material therefore exposes a central division between the two men. Jonathan judges substances by their usefulness under extreme conditions and by the problems they can solve. Antomine judges them according to their relation to the Illuminated King’s doctrine and to the boundary between humanity and the darkness. His concern is not limited to the immediate risk of an explosion or mechanical failure; he fears that contact with such powers may corrupt people, compromise the expedition, or place human souls beyond the protection of the light.

Tactical Possibilities and Limits

After the Endeavor reaches a hostile and mysterious settlement, Jonathan considers how its remaining supplies might be used for defense. Antomine warns that the ship contains materials capable of causing immense destruction and specifically names fire dust and unflame. He also points out that the Umbraught could drain the zint from the engines, leaving the ship unable to move. This makes unflame part of a broader strategic problem: the Endeavor’s weapons and energy systems may be powerful, but they are limited, vulnerable, and difficult to replace in the wilderness.

Jonathan recognizes the force of the warning, even though he is irritated that he had not considered the threat himself. He searches his notebooks and the equipment recovered from the ship, but most of what he has brought is designed to protect or conceal rather than destroy. A broad deployment of fire dust would risk damaging the mechanisms the Endeavor needs and could expose the ship to enemy forces. Unflame is consequently valuable without being a simple solution. Its existence enlarges Jonathan’s defensive options, but its use remains constrained by the danger it poses to the ship and by the uncertain conditions in which it must be deployed.

Instead of using either product from the Cult of Fire as a temporary barrier, Jonathan chooses incense. He understands that fire dust or unflame might create a barrier but could also damage essential mechanisms; the incense produces smoke that blocks sight and sound without committing the ship to a more destructive intervention. This contrast clarifies unflame’s role in the expedition: it is potent enough to be considered in a crisis, yet hazardous enough that a less aggressive and more controllable substance is preferred when concealment can accomplish the same immediate purpose.

Political and Thematic Significance

Unflame belongs to the energy economy of the world alongside zint, luminiferous terrestrite, and the rare luminiferous gems that Jonathan offers to improve the Endeavor’s engines. The Industrial Quarter’s immense stacks extract and distill luminiferous terrestrite to produce zint, while Jonathan’s cargo carries portable equipment to reproduce part of that energy chain in remote territory. Unflame stands apart from this industrial infrastructure: it is a specialized, occult-adjacent material whose value cannot be reduced to ordinary fuel or engineering.

That difference helps explain why it becomes politically charged. The Illuminated King is interested in Jonathan’s discovery of sunlight and sends Antomine to safeguard royal interests. Antomine’s stated mission is to prevent corruption by the things beyond the darkness and to purge secrets that turn humanity away from the light. By naming unflame among the materials Jonathan possesses, he implicitly treats the object as evidence of the expedition leader’s dangerous proximity to forbidden powers. The substance becomes part of the authority struggle between royal doctrine and exploratory autonomy.

The later confrontation at Bright Defile reveals the limits of that authority. In the presence of sunlight, Antomine is compelled to acknowledge that Jonathan Heights’s mastery of secrets even the Illuminated King cannot fathom threatens everything the King has built. Unflame is not itself the cause of that final conflict, but it belongs to the same class of hidden capabilities that Antomine seeks to regulate. Jonathan’s passage into the sunlight, where he experiences the warmth of the sun and the liberty of truth, reverses the hierarchy that had made substances such as unflame signs of contamination. In that final contrast, unflame represents the compromised and contested technologies of the dark journey, while sunlight represents a power beyond the systems of prohibition, extraction, and royal control that shaped the expedition.
