Zint hand gun
Chasing SunlightThe zint-pistol is a compact weapon powered by luminiferous gems and capable of projecting a concentrated blue-white beam. Its importance lies not only in its destructive power but in the way it embodies the wider zint system: the same energy that illuminates Beacon, drives carriages and airships, and supports industrial life can also be concentrated into violence. During the expedition, the pistol becomes a practical instrument of survival, a possession subject to confiscation, and finally an object whose damaged condition records the limits of technology against an altered reality.
Construction and Energy System
The weapon belongs to a technological culture built around luminiferous terrestrite, commonly called zint, whose extraction and distillation sustain the human settlements. In the Industrial Quarter, the extraction stacks are described as columns of glass and steel surrounded by the darkest concentration of the city’s industry, their enormous machinery producing a low vibration and occasional electrical discharges. Zint lights line the streets, power carriages, and drive airship engines; the zint-pistol extends that infrastructure into a handheld military device.
Its immediate power source is the luminiferous gem. Jonathan Heights carries such gems as valuable equipment, displaying four of them when negotiating with Carter over the Endeavor’s engines. The expedition also transports portable distillation machinery, lifting-gas equipment, searchlights, crew-served zint guns, and other supplies, showing that the pistol is part of a larger chain of extraction, refinement, transport, maintenance, and armed deployment rather than an isolated invention. The expedition’s later reliance on a portable zint distillery reinforces the weapon’s dependence on a difficult energy economy: raw material must be processed before it becomes usable power, and the apparatus itself must be carried, operated, and protected in the wilderness.
Antomine’s Use in the City
The pistol’s decisive appearance comes during the party’s attempt to cross a hostile city whose streets and boundaries are shaped by perception, desire, and lethal illusion. Jonathan offers his pistol to Antomine and tells him, in effect, that the place may be thwarted by refusing to obey its rules. Antomine removes the luminiferous gems with practiced speed, places them in his pocket, and takes aim with the weapon. Jonathan then corrects his trajectory, directing the shot toward the Endeavor.
When Antomine pulls the trigger, the beam flares like lightning. It punches a round hole through walls and lampposts, leaving their edges sizzling and flickering with the blue-white glow of zint. More than a simple blast, the shot creates a visible line through the city: the lingering remnants of the beam outline a route toward a distant point of gas-lamp illumination that Jonathan can identify through the surrounding darkness. The weapon therefore functions as both force and orientation. It destroys obstacles while making a path legible in a place where ordinary spatial certainty has collapsed.
The opening is immediately exploited. Eleanor McAvey runs ahead, Antomine’s guards follow with their burdens, and Jonathan takes the rear behind Antomine. The group crosses the breach by leaping over the remaining wall, ducking through holes, and accepting the risk that brute force may only temporarily affect the city. The pistol does not defeat the city’s deeper power. When the city’s obsession returns, holes become apparent gates to oblivion and light appears capable of cutting and burning, even though these dangers are perceptual rather than physically real. The weapon’s success is consequently limited but crucial: it supplies a narrow opportunity for escape without restoring normal reality.
Damage and Temporal Hazard
The pistol remains relevant after the expedition’s encounter with the frozen city. On the Endeavor’s bridge, Montgomery reports that Eleanor and Antomine have gone to the forward guns, while debris hangs around the ship. Antomine later sits near the open upper hatch with a damaged pistol beside him; its glasswork has cracked. The damage places the weapon within the same material crisis as the ship itself, whose exterior has been struck by frozen beams and fragments of glass.
Outside the Endeavor, several glowing blue zint beams remain suspended in stopped time. They have severed or destroyed lengths of glass that impaled the envelope, but froze after passing beyond the ship’s protective presence. The damaged pistol beside Antomine thus belongs to a scene in which ordinary distinctions between weapon, projectile, and environment have become unstable. A device designed to release energy in an instant is forced into a world where beams can hang motionless, where distance is crossed by crossing time, and where familiar technological rules no longer provide reliable safety.
The weapon’s condition also contrasts with the Endeavor’s powerful engines, which survive earlier damage while the envelope and steering surfaces require repairs. Zint technology is not uniformly dependable: some components remain robust, others are depleted or broken, and the expedition repeatedly discovers that its tools and supplies are fewer than expected. The pistol’s cracked glasswork makes that dependence visible at the scale of a single object.
Political and Narrative Significance
The zint-pistol concentrates the ideology of the light-based human order into a portable form. Zint is the material foundation of civilization’s claim to hold back eternal darkness, yet the same energy produces weapons, guards industrial gates, and enables expeditions into regions defined by human powerlessness. The pistol therefore blurs the boundary between illumination and coercion. Its beam is light, but it is also a projectile; it reveals a route, but it does so by burning through the built environment.
Its use also exposes the different practical attitudes of the expedition’s leaders. Jonathan treats the pistol as equipment whose value depends on accurate judgment and tactical application. He hands it over, corrects the aim, and orders the party forward once the passage is opened. Antomine, as an inquisitor and representative of the Illuminated King’s order, handles the weapon with technical confidence while remaining embedded in a religious and political system that polices dangerous materials and nonhuman forms of power. The same object can therefore serve exploration, military action, and institutional authority.
The weapon’s power has an important limit. It can punch through walls and lamps, clear a physical shortcut, and help the party cross an otherwise impossible section of the city, but it cannot make the city’s illusions false in their emotional effect. Nor can it prevent temporal stasis from turning beams and broken glass into persistent hazards. The pistol is powerful precisely within a narrow range of material problems; beyond that range, Jonathan and his companions must depend on interpretation, discipline, and movement rather than firepower alone.
Afterlife as an Object of the Expedition
The zint-pistol belongs to the expedition’s broader inventory of portable infrastructure. The Endeavor carries food, water, spare parts, raw materials, clothing, bedding, searchlights, zint guns, and a distillation apparatus because the journey will pass beyond settlements where supplies can be replenished. Even the expedition’s refueling stop depends on the portable zint distillery continuing its work without interruption while the surrounding darkness produces unexplained noises and the floating lakes supply water and possible food.
Against that background, the pistol represents both preparation and vulnerability. It is a small, mobile concentration of the civilization that Jonathan Heights is carrying eastward, but its usefulness depends on gems, maintenance, and a reality stable enough for a beam to behave as expected. In the city, it opens a path toward escape. In the temporal disturbance, its cracked form rests beside Antomine as evidence that the path of light can itself be damaged, arrested, and made strange. Its decisive narrative function is therefore double: it is an instrument that helps the expedition move through darkness, and a material reminder that no instrument of the light can guarantee mastery over the worlds into which the expedition travels.
