Accepting the Call to Adventure

Cinnamon Bun

Accepting the Call to Adventure is the threshold event that changes Broccoli Bunch’s existence from an ordinary student’s future into an active quest. A girl who has always searched for adventure, whether in real life or in books, recognizes the summons when an invisible system offers her a mission: a great evil has taken root in the world, and she is called upon to save it. Her immediate acceptance transports her from a mathematics classroom into a ruined, unfamiliar environment, establishing both the book’s portal-fantasy premise and its central tension between voluntary enthusiasm and the ominous cost of becoming a hero.

The Ordinary World and the Summons

Broccoli Bunch encounters the call during a mathematics lesson on geometric series, only a few months before the end of high school. The classroom represents an ordinary world she is willing to endure rather than cherish: the subject is not her favorite, the teacher is not her favorite, and her attention is sustained largely by the practical desire to keep her grades up. At the same time, her life is already oriented toward departure. She expects the world to open after high school, and she has inherited a desire to travel from parents described as being struck by wanderlust. Adventure is therefore not an alien temptation imposed upon an entirely contented life; it is the possibility she has been waiting to recognize.

The summons arrives as a sound no one else appears to hear, compared to a cowbell falling from a skyscraper into a fifty-five-gallon drum. In response, a thin, nearly translucent box materializes in the air. Its message is stark: a great evil has set its root in the world, and Broccoli Bunch is being asked to save it. The interface presents two choices, “I accept” and “I refuse,” making the call unusually explicit. The supernatural event is framed not as a vague omen but as an interactive decision, one that converts destiny into a button waiting to be pressed.

Acceptance and the Threshold Crossing

Broccoli Bunch initially suspects that the floating prompt cannot be real. She tests its apparent physical presence by tilting her head and watching it follow her movement, then looks around the classroom while other students merely regard her with curiosity. When a classmate shows no sign of seeing the box, Broccoli Bunch understands that the invitation is private to her. Instead of treating that isolation as proof of danger, she responds with growing delight. Her grin becomes so broad that her cheeks hurt, and she imagines her adventurous parents pressing the acceptance option repeatedly.

She reaches out and presses “I accept.” The system immediately answers, “Ding! The world thanks you for your sacrifice!” The wording gives the choice a darker dimension: Broccoli Bunch experiences it as an exhilarating opportunity, while the world’s response implies that accepting the quest may involve real loss, danger, or death. Her first physical consequence is abrupt and undignified, as she falls onto her butt. The scene consequently balances heroic destiny with comic bodily shock. The threshold is momentous, but it is not ceremonially noble; it begins with a girl, a button, an ominous notification, and a fall.

The transition itself is instantaneous. In less time than a blink, the sterile classroom, snowy courtyard, desks, chairs, bored students, distant traffic, and air-exchange systems disappear. Broccoli Bunch instead hears birdsong, frogs, and wind moving through trees. She finds herself inside what remains of a room: flat stones form the floor, wooden beams rise through stone walls, and rotted tables, crushed chairs, mould, rot, and decaying leaves reveal that the place has long been abandoned. The change is therefore spatial, sensory, and existential at once. The familiar world has not gradually receded; it has been replaced before she can prepare for the consequences of her answer.

The Quest Becomes a Systemic Life

Acceptance does not end with transportation. It initiates a structure in which actions are interpreted, classified, and rewarded by an unseen system. Trapped in the ruined room, Broccoli Bunch finds the only exit blocked by fallen stones. She pulls a surviving seat into position, wipes its surface clean, and is told that, by performing a Special Action in line with her Class, she has unlocked the skill Cleaning. The notification turns an instinctive practical act into measurable progression. Even a mundane task can become the first expression of a new identity when the world supplies a class and a rule for recognizing it.

Broccoli Bunch responds by taking the system seriously without surrendering her sense of humor. She regards Cleaning as silly and rather boring, yet also sees that it could help her, especially if she works at it. Because she already likes cleaning, the reward creates an immediate link between personal inclination and mechanical advancement. She picks up a broom and shovel, clears the ground beneath an opening, and begins pushing dead leaves outside. The call to adventure thus acquires an unexpected domestic texture: survival and advancement begin not with a sword or spell, but with clearing rot from a ruined room.

Later system messages confirm that her new life will be governed by this same exchange between action and feedback. After three level-one Sentinel Ghosts of Threewells are defeated, the system grants bonus experience for killing three monsters above her level, and her Cinnamon Bun class reaches level 1 with Stamina increasing by five. When she discovers the Evil Root, the quest menu informs her that she is too weak to destroy it and instructs her to break the Core so that the Root will starve. The original acceptance therefore grows into a chain of escalating obligations: the call names an evil, the system assigns procedures, and Broccoli Bunch must act despite warnings that the required solution is dangerously beyond her strength.

Sacrifice, Persistence, and Continuing Adventure

The phrase thanking her for her sacrifice recurs after she completes the dangerous quest. Exhausted, with her knees giving out, Broccoli Bunch collapses and gasps for air. Yet the physical collapse does not become a rejection of the adventure. Instead, adrenaline makes her laugh until she rolls on the ground, and the “Quest Complete!” notification repeats the world’s thanks. The repetition changes the phrase from an unsettling greeting into a refrain attached to achievement, danger, and survival. Her laughter does not erase the threat; it shows the distinctive way she metabolizes it, turning fear and exhaustion into exhilaration.

The same pattern continues as Broccoli Bunch moves onward. After parting from a group and acknowledging that she still has a long way to go, she receives another reward: repeating a Special Action enough times unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. Her departure into the unknown is therefore marked by a progression from an individual response to a social capacity. Accepting the call begins with a private button no one else can see, but the resulting adventure eventually recognizes repeated connection with others as a skill in its own right.

Narrative Significance

This event establishes the book’s governing contrast between agency and programming. Broccoli Bunch freely chooses the quest, and her excitement makes the decision feel authentic; nevertheless, the choice is immediately absorbed into a system of prompts, classes, skills, experience, quest updates, and rewards. The world thanks her for a sacrifice whose full meaning she cannot yet know, while the interface continues to translate her behavior into progress. Her adventure is voluntary at the moment of acceptance but increasingly structured by consequences she did not design.

The event also defines the story’s comic heroic register. The summons announces a great evil, yet the heroine’s first transition ends with a fall, her first unlocked skill is Cleaning, and even major victories are accompanied by panting, stumbling, and helpless laughter. Those details do not weaken the call; they make its transformation credible. Broccoli Bunch does not become heroic by abandoning ordinary preferences or physical vulnerability. She crosses the threshold carrying them with her, and the adventure begins when the world’s grandest demand meets the practical, curious, and unexpectedly cheerful person who accepts it.
