Airship Mission Briefing

Cinnamon Bun

Airship Mission Briefing is the moment when an airship journey becomes a formal Exploration Guild operation. Convened aboard the vessel, the briefing gives Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis a concrete assignment at Fort Froger and establishes the contrast between the Guild’s paperwork and the uncertain frontier it claims to make legible: a decommissioned fort, shifting magical ley lines, unmapped roads, and a mission judged easy before the expedition has begun.

Setting and Participants

The briefing takes place in the airship’s forward area, which is little more than a basic kitchen with a desk and chairs firmly bolted to the floor. Gabriel presides at the head of the table, securing two stacks of papers with knives so they will not move. The twins are already seated when Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis arrive, and Broccoli sits between Amaryllis and Gabriel. This improvised room gives the meeting a distinctly practical character: official business is conducted amid the ship’s ordinary equipment rather than in a dedicated Guild office.

Gabriel acts as the mission’s dispatcher and senior authority. His manner is casual and impatient; after assigning the work, he announces that he is going to get very drunk and should not be bothered. That irreverence does not make the briefing meaningless. His handling of the files, his division of responsibilities, and his awareness of the magical disturbance show that he is transmitting an organized operational plan, even while presenting it as a brief interruption before the party can go off and do whatever it wants.

Division of the Mission

Gabriel first assigns the twins to investigate a shift in the magical ley lines. He asks whether either of them can sense mana well enough to track the source, and Florien confirms that he can. Gabriel immediately gives the file to the twins, making their task one of magical detection and source-finding rather than physical exploration. The briefing therefore divides the expedition according to capability: the twins follow an invisible magical disturbance, while Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis handle the visible geography of an abandoned military site.

The second assignment concerns an old fort built when people expected war with the Trentans. The fort has since been decommissioned and left to decay. Gabriel orders Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis to check it and map the roads around it, then removes the knife holding the second file in place and hands the folder to Broccoli. The assignment is not framed as a battle or a recovery mission. Its stated work is inspection, surveying, and cartography, but the fort’s military history gives the apparently modest task a political and strategic background.

The Official Expedition Record

Amaryllis opens the folder aboard the ship and finds two apparently identical sheets. The document is titled “Exploration Guild Official Expedition Summary” and identifies the operation as Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC, Port-Royal Branch. Its mission statement is to explore, scout, and map the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to the meeting point.

The record estimates that the expedition will take approximately three days and rates its difficulty as low to negligible. Those details formalize Gabriel’s spoken instructions into an institutional schedule and risk assessment. The expedition is not merely an errand chosen by companions; it has a number, a branch, a planned duration, a return condition, and an official description of purpose. At the same time, the paperwork leaves questions unresolved. Broccoli Bunch wonders what “PC” means and who named the fort, but asking about the calendar openly would seem suspicious. Instead, Broccoli asks whether the fort was really named “Fort Froger,” revealing how even the document’s most basic labels can carry unexplained history.

Exploration as System and Practice

The briefing places exploration between adventure and administration. The participants are preparing to enter a neglected location, yet their immediate tools are folders, maps, knives holding papers steady, and a mission statement. The Guild’s method is to transform uncertain territory into a sequence of manageable actions: explore it, scout it, map it, and return to a designated meeting point. The low-to-negligible difficulty rating expresses confidence in that system, although the fort’s abandonment and wartime origin imply that the region is not simply empty space.

The contrast between the mundane setting and the magical geography is equally important. In the same meeting, one team is told to track a change in ley lines while the other is sent to survey roads around a ruined fort. Magic and cartography are treated as parallel forms of fieldwork. The expedition thus joins supernatural perception to bureaucratic mapping, presenting both as practical methods for making an unfamiliar region knowable.

Consequences and Narrative Function

For Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis, the briefing supplies their next shared objective and confirms their status as expedition partners. Their work is defined jointly, but Broccoli receives the physical file, making the briefing the immediate point at which responsibility is placed in Broccoli’s hands. The assignment also moves the pair away from the airship’s temporary safety and toward a site associated with a former expectation of war with the Trentans.

As a narrative device, the briefing slows the pace long enough to establish names, institutions, logistics, and stakes before the party proceeds. It turns travel into a mission without removing the sense of uncertainty. Fort Froger is officially low-risk, yet it is a decaying military remnant reached through a region whose magical conditions are changing. The neat language of the summary therefore functions as both preparation and possible misdirection: the Guild has supplied a route and a timetable, but the unexplained fort name, the shifting ley lines, and the abandoned landscape leave the expedition’s real significance open.
