Booksie

Cinnamon Bun

Booksie is a young bunny-eared bookseller in Port Royal whose brief appearance establishes the bookstore as one of Broccoli’s first accessible gateways to literacy, magical training, and expedition preparation. Her warmth contrasts with the indifference and institutional suspicion Broccoli encounters elsewhere: she treats Broccoli as a prospective customer and quickly as a possible friend, while also recognizing the practical needs of an aspiring explorer.

Identity and Introduction

Booksie runs a narrow, tall bookstore tucked between a butcher’s shop and an ordinary home. Its sign is an opened book with large bunny ears projecting from it, a visual announcement that the shop and its proprietor belong together. Inside, enchantments suppress the sulphurous and horse-like odors of the city, while the sound of steam pipes is reduced to a faint murmur. The shop contains shelves of scrolls and leather-bound books, along with glass-fronted display cases where selected volumes rest on plush cushions. This carefully ordered interior gives Booksie’s workplace the character of a protected cultural space within the noisy port city.

Broccoli first notices Booksie because of the large floppy black bunny ears atop her head. She appears young, perhaps still in her twenties, and wears a nice dress; no ordinary ears are visible. Broccoli’s astonishment initially risks becoming impolite, but the encounter quickly settles into mutual friendliness. Booksie introduces herself as Booksie, explaining that it is what her friends call her, and Broccoli responds by offering the nickname Broc while accepting Booksie’s preferred name. The exchange is small but important: Booksie’s self-presentation makes room for familiarity rather than hierarchy.

Bookselling and Magical Instruction

Booksie does more than offer a generic assortment of texts. After learning that Broccoli is preparing for an exploration mission and that Broccoli’s mana is of the cleaning type, she selects materials intended to be useful and affordable. She leaves for two or three minutes, bouncing around the store before returning with two books and a pile of scrolls, then acknowledges that she had forgotten to ask about Broccoli’s budget. Her embarrassment is part of her approachable characterization, but the resulting selection shows practical attention to a customer’s circumstances.

Her principal recommendation is A Guide to Manipulating the Essence, a thirty-silver primer from the Deepmarsh magic academy. Booksie describes it as a simple book used to teach younger students, with explanations, uncomplicated diagrams, and practice exercises for refining magical control. The language seems condescending to Broccoli, yet its elementary presentation is precisely what makes it suitable for someone still catching up on basic knowledge. Booksie also finds several inexpensive spell materials, offering them for two sil each. Her role therefore joins commerce to instruction: the books are commodities, but they are also tools for transforming an inexperienced traveler into a more capable practitioner.

Broccoli chooses all three of the inexpensive items as well as A Guide to Manipulating the Essence. Booksie then runs around to find a bag and counts out the silvers received for the purchase. The transaction remains modest in scale, but it gives Broccoli a concrete educational foundation and a reason to imagine returning. Broccoli leaves the shelves with the promise of coming back, conscious of having substantial knowledge to acquire.

Relationship with Broccoli

Booksie’s relationship with Broccoli is defined by an unusual combination of commercial service and immediate personal ease. She asks what Broccoli needs, notices the connection to an exploration mission, and responds to the cleaning-oriented mana with a targeted search rather than dismissing the request. Her playful gestures, including tapping a knuckle against her head and sticking out her tongue when apologizing about the budget, prevent the scene from feeling like a formal consultation. The bookstore becomes a place where Broccoli can admit inexperience without being treated as a burden.

That welcome is especially significant beside the institutional language surrounding Broccoli’s expedition career. The Exploration Guild contract marks Broccoli as a temporary member, specifies protections and discounts, and regulates expenses, while the expedition paperwork formalizes the mission around Fort Froger. Booksie’s shop operates outside those official documents but supports the same larger movement into exploration. Her books and scrolls supply the cultural and magical capital that the guild’s forms alone cannot provide.

Narrative Role and Significance

Booksie functions as a threshold figure. The bookstore lies away from the busiest central streets, in a quieter neighborhood of large homes, but it remains connected to the heterogeneous life of Port Royal. Within it, Broccoli encounters named books, scrolls, diagrams, and a specialized primer rather than merely strange people and unfamiliar institutions. Booksie makes the city’s accumulated knowledge materially available through shelves, prices, bags, and readable pages.

Her scene also establishes a contrast between knowledge as exclusion and knowledge as invitation. Elsewhere, Broccoli is asked whether Broccoli can write a name, a question that carries an assumption of illiteracy; in Booksie’s store, the response to inexperience is not suspicion but recommendation. Booksie’s friendliness does not erase the economic limits of learning—the books must still be paid for—but her low-cost selection makes entry possible. She is consequently less a grand magical authority than a local mediator who helps Broccoli cross from curiosity into deliberate preparation.

Booksie’s importance rests on this practical hospitality. She gives Broccoli a place to browse, a vocabulary for choosing magical resources, and an initial educational route suited to limited funds and undeveloped control. The shop’s physical design, Booksie’s bunny-eared appearance, and her playful manner all make knowledge memorable, but the decisive action is concrete: she identifies what Broccoli needs, finds usable materials, and completes the sale. In a story shaped by quests, guilds, and changing levels of competence, Booksie represents the first friendly infrastructure that makes advancement imaginable.
