Broccoli Bunch–Dylan quest-commission relationship

Cinnamon Bun

The Broccoli Bunch–Dylan quest-commission relationship begins as a chance commercial meeting and develops into a compact but important alliance between an itinerant adventurer and a grenoil alchemist. Broccoli Bunch arrives with gathered plants to sell; Dylan evaluates them, identifies what he needs, and turns the exchange into a quest concerning the ruined Dunwich Dungeon and its Two-Lipped Tulips. Broccoli Bunch’s later return with a large haul confirms the relationship through completed work, while Dylan’s payment, potions, and concern for Broccoli Bunch’s survival make the commission more reciprocal than a simple purchase.

First Meeting and Commercial Basis

Dylan is introduced at an alchemist shop that also contains a clinic. A faerie attendant directs Broccoli Bunch to him, describing Dylan as an unprofessional worker after a vial falls from a cluttered table and explodes. Dylan arrives limping, wearing glasses that make his eyes appear unusually large against his froggy face. The clumsy surroundings establish him as a working alchemist rather than a distant authority, but his practical competence becomes clear as soon as he begins inspecting Broccoli Bunch’s goods.

The first exchange is awkward because Broccoli Bunch openly says that he would love to be Dylan’s friend, and Dylan mistakes the statement for a request for a friendship potion. Once the misunderstanding is corrected, the interaction settles into trade. Dylan rejects the Red Chokerberries, accepts Blood Dandelion buds for seven copper, and buys Marsh Rose buds for six copper. Broccoli Bunch treats the modest income seriously because the plants were easy to gather and could become a repeatable source of money. The exchange therefore gives the relationship an economic foundation: Broccoli Bunch offers accessible field labor, while Dylan provides a market and specialized judgment.

The Seven-Petal Candle Flower and the Quest

The relationship changes when Broccoli Bunch places the Seven-Petal Candle Flower on Dylan’s counter. Dylan immediately recognizes the plant and asks where it was found. Broccoli Bunch explains that a pixie helped locate it on the road. The flower is more valuable than the earlier plants because it connects Broccoli Bunch’s gathering work to information about the wider adventuring economy.

Dylan offers twenty silver for the whole collection and then asks whether Broccoli Bunch belongs to a guild. After learning that Broccoli Bunch is not yet affiliated with one but hopes to join the Exploration Guild, Dylan frames the request as suitable for a human who enjoys quests. He explains that a dungeon called Dunwich was rediscovered near the outpost after having been destroyed long ago. Negative mana has made the area inhospitable, apparitions remain nearby, and the site is unsafe even if it is not overwhelmingly dangerous. Most importantly for the commission, Two-Lipped Tulips grow there.

The request is thus shaped around Broccoli Bunch’s existing abilities and interests. Dylan does not merely assign an abstract errand; he identifies a plant that Broccoli Bunch can gather, places it in a dangerous former dungeon, and supplies enough geographic and supernatural context for the task to become an adventuring objective. The quest also expands Broccoli Bunch’s map of the world: the ruined Dunwich Dungeon is not only a place of danger but a source of valuable alchemical material and a possible route toward guild recognition.

Completion and Renegotiated Payment

When Broccoli Bunch returns in worse weather, the plants for Dylan come first among the goods to be disposed of. Broccoli Bunch knocks on the alchemist’s window and announces that the quest has been completed, then places a haversack full of flowers on the counter. Dylan is visibly impressed by the size of the delivery. He empties the sack across his workspace and counts seventy-eight flowers, noting that some are damaged but that the haul is larger than expected.

Dylan’s response preserves the logic of trade while acknowledging exceptional performance. He offers less for damaged specimens but also tells Broccoli Bunch that the quantity exceeds what he expected in a single delivery. He asks whether Broccoli Bunch wants the excess returned. Broccoli Bunch declines because the extra plants have no apparent use and instead proposes trading them for healing supplies. The completed commission therefore becomes a negotiation rather than a fixed reward: the value of the labor is recalculated in light of quantity, condition, and the adventurer’s immediate needs.

Broccoli Bunch’s request reveals the practical cost of the quest. During the Dunwich expedition, Broccoli Bunch encountered Abominations without carrying even a healing potion. Dylan calls this foolhardy and emphasizes that a good potion can mean the difference between life and death. He supplies two common-quality health potions and three trifecta potions, which combine several kinds of aid in a single bottle and are especially useful for delvers whose health and other resources have fallen together. The potions are not merely merchandise; Dylan gives them partly for his own peace of mind, extending the commission into an act of protective concern.

Dylan also adds a gold coin for the delivered flowers. Broccoli Bunch recognizes its scale immediately: a single gold coin equals a thousand copper and could pay for a hundred nights at an inn. The payment transforms the quest from a small plant-gathering errand into a materially decisive success. Broccoli Bunch stores the potions carefully, places one trifecta within easy reach, and leaves with both money and equipment gained through the work.

Mutual Utility and Narrative Function

The relationship is reciprocal but not symmetrical. Broccoli Bunch supplies mobility, courage, and labor in places where an alchemist cannot safely or conveniently gather materials. Dylan supplies botanical identification, purchasing power, quest information, and consumables that Broccoli Bunch lacks. The exchange moves through several forms of value: copper for ordinary plants, silver for the Seven-Petal Candle Flower, a dangerous commission for Two-Lipped Tulips, and then potions and gold in recognition of the completed haul.

The relationship also contrasts Broccoli Bunch’s willingness to accept danger with Dylan’s professional awareness of its consequences. Broccoli Bunch views the lack of healing supplies only after surviving the encounter; Dylan immediately understands the vulnerability created by that omission. His warning does not cancel the commercial arrangement, but it places responsibility inside it. A successful commission must leave the adventurer capable of surviving the next one.

Dylan’s commission further connects Broccoli Bunch to the broader quest structure of the world. The system presents tasks, rewards, and progression as if danger can be translated into measurable advancement, while Dylan supplies the human-scale version of that system through requests, prices, and practical advice. Broccoli Bunch can receive experience for combat and skill growth for repeated actions, but the Dylan relationship shows another path of advancement: gathering, bargaining, traveling, and building a reputation through reliable completion.

The alliance remains limited in the available scenes; it does not become a formal partnership or lasting guild affiliation. Its significance lies instead in the pattern it establishes. Broccoli Bunch approaches Dylan first as a buyer, then accepts a commission, returns with more than expected, and leaves better equipped to continue adventuring. Dylan begins as a shopkeeper assessing plants and ends as a commissioner who pays generously and worries about the adventurer’s safety. Their relationship makes commerce, questing, and friendship overlap without fully collapsing into one another: the initial desire for friendship is misunderstood as a potion request, but practical trust is eventually earned through work.
