Broccoli Bunch–Orange relationship
Cinnamon BunThe Broccoli Bunch–Orange relationship is a spirit-partner bond built from affection, protection, and everyday companionship. Orange is not merely a summoned asset: she is the spirit kitten Broccoli Bunch carries, checks on, shelters, and introduces as “the best kitten,” while Orange’s recurring presence turns Broccoli’s support-oriented Cinnamon Bun identity into visible practice. Their relationship remains intimate even when circumstances are dangerous, because care is expressed through small physical acts as much as through combat or magic.
Identity and Foundation
Broccoli Bunch’s first class is Cinnamon Bun, a class defined as being “Too good for this world. Too pure. You are the perfect support and friend to all.” Broccoli finds the description smug and admits that her friends consider her naive, but the class nevertheless establishes the moral and relational pattern that Orange embodies. Broccoli’s instinct is to befriend, assist, apologize, and protect; Orange becomes the companion toward whom those instincts are most consistently directed.
Broccoli explicitly identifies Orange as a spirit kitten companion when introducing herself and her abilities. She presents herself as poor at combat but good at talking, then describes Orange as not yet very capable in combat while emphasizing that she gives “great snuggles.” The contrast matters: Orange’s value is not reduced to battlefield usefulness. Affection, comfort, and companionship are treated as genuine contributions, making the kitten part of Broccoli’s understanding of what a successful partnership can be.
Everyday Intimacy and Physical Closeness
The relationship is repeatedly staged through proximity. After sleeping, Broccoli’s first private concern is to make sure Orange is safe after spending the night cuddled in her arms. Broccoli then completes the ordinary, slightly embarrassing work of waking, cleaning herself, and getting dressed. Orange is therefore woven into the most unheroic parts of Broccoli’s life, not reserved for dramatic summoning scenes. The bond survives in bedrooms, travel gear, camps, and dangerous expeditions alike.
Broccoli also treats Orange as a small living presence whose comfort and safety require attention. Before exploring an airship, Broccoli asks Amaryllis Albatross to watch over the kitten, worried that Orange might be hurt while she investigates the ship. She tosses Orange onto Amaryllis’s lap only because she needs a temporary guardian, then leaves to find the captain. The gesture is impulsive and comic, but its purpose is serious: Broccoli does not assume that a companion who is magical is therefore invulnerable.
The same protective habit appears during field operations. When Broccoli’s stamina is reduced but still usable, she removes Orange from her shoulder and hands her to Amaryllis, asking Amaryllis to watch both the kitten and Broccoli’s bag. Amaryllis accepts Orange with surprising care, and Orange does not protest. The exchange shows that Broccoli’s attachment can extend beyond possession or control: she entrusts Orange to another person when cooperation offers better protection than keeping the kitten physically with her.
Danger, Trust, and Protection
Broccoli’s relationship with Orange becomes especially clear when she explains the kitten’s limits to Gunther. Orange is a spirit kitten, and Broccoli does not know what might be capable of harming her, so Broccoli can unsummon her if conditions become dangerous. This knowledge combines uncertainty with responsibility. Broccoli cannot promise that Orange is safe everywhere, but she has a practical means of withdrawing her from danger and is prepared to use it.
Orange’s behavior reinforces the relationship’s physical tenderness. While Broccoli is speaking with Gunther, Orange is being carried inside the front of Amaryllis’s jacket, with only her fluffy head visible. When Broccoli pats her, Orange looks at her and then nestles deeper into Amaryllis’s chest. The kitten’s comfort is not presented as a rejection of Broccoli; instead, the scene shows a companion secure enough to accept shelter from another trusted person while remaining part of Broccoli’s circle of care.
Broccoli’s protective instincts also operate through preparation. While settling beside a fire in the rain, she fetches her spear “just in case,” and the candle Milread left continues burning despite raindrops. Orange’s relationship to this environment is not separately dramatized there, but the broader scene places Broccoli’s care within a pattern of vigilance: companionship includes staying ready for danger even during rest. Her support role is therefore practical rather than merely sentimental.
Partnership Beyond Utility
Orange’s combat ability is described as limited, and Broccoli’s own combat ability is also poor. Broccoli relies on Cleaning magic and a makeshift weapon proficiency, while identifying herself as someone who wants to become ranged damage support. Yet the relationship does not weaken because neither partner is defined as a dominant fighter. Orange contributes through presence and comfort, and Broccoli contributes through protection, communication, and care. Their partnership broadens the meaning of usefulness within an adventuring party.
That broader model contrasts with Gunther and Throat Ripper. Gunther explains that he abandoned his former life to change his class and bring back his one true companion, then travels with Throat Ripper despite the distrust directed toward death-oriented classes. Broccoli responds sympathetically, calling the sacrifice beautiful. Her reaction illuminates her own relationship with Orange: she recognizes companionship as something worthy of serious commitment, even when the bond exists across the boundary between ordinary life and spirit existence.
The contrast also clarifies the different shapes of devotion. Gunther’s bond with Throat Ripper is marked by resurrection, undeath, social exile, and long-term wandering. Broccoli and Orange’s bond is shown through cuddling, carrying, introductions, handoffs, and the option to unsummon Orange when danger rises. One relationship is surrounded by death mana and the cost of restoring a companion; the other makes gentleness, safety, and ordinary physical affection into the central evidence of attachment.
Narrative and Thematic Significance
Orange gives Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class a concrete relational form. The class description speaks in broad language about purity, love, justice, support, and friendship, but Orange turns those abstractions into repeated behavior: Broccoli checks that Orange survived the night, asks others to guard her, carries her close, explains her vulnerabilities, and celebrates her cuddles even while discussing combat roles. The relationship demonstrates that Broccoli’s identity is not only a menu label or a personality joke; it shapes how she moves through danger and how she evaluates other people.
The bond also links affection with boundaries. Broccoli is willing to bring Orange into hazardous places, yet she acknowledges that the kitten may be vulnerable and retains the ability to remove her from the scene. She does not treat protection as absolute control. Instead, the relationship depends on judgment: Orange may stay close when circumstances permit, hide within another companion’s clothing, or be unsummoned when the threat becomes too great.
Finally, Orange serves as a recurring emotional anchor amid mud, abominations, undead creatures, rain, and expeditionary uncertainty. Broccoli can gag at the smell of raw sewage, sink into mud until it reaches her chin, and discuss combat limitations, but the presence of a kitten remains a source of softness inside those scenes. Their relationship does not erase danger; it gives Broccoli a reason to remain caring within it. Through Orange, the narrative makes friendship tangible as a daily practice of attention, trust, and protection.
