Broccoli Joins the Exploration Guild

Cinnamon Bun

Broccoli Bunch Joins the Exploration Guild is the turning point at which her solitary, system-mediated adventures become connected to a formal institution. Her admission is enabled by Leonard Chand’nuit’s sealed recommendation, arranged around the Exploration Guild’s need to pair a new noble member with a capable recruit, and made concrete through a temporary contract, a badge, and a next-day departure for a week-long voyage. The event therefore carries a built-in contradiction: Broccoli is welcomed because she arrives at exactly the right moment, yet the same institutional pathway later declares her a liability.

Recruitment Through Recommendation

Broccoli reaches the guild headquarters after navigating the ordinary local infrastructure of guards and workers. A bored Grenoil Fencer and a bored Grenoil Hunter identify the settlement under its outpost designation, while an attentive grenoil City Guard directs her toward the Exploration Guild. These encounters place her admission within a chain of practical gatekeeping rather than presenting the guild as an abstract destination: guards identify travelers, local personnel provide directions, and the guild receives those who can reach its doors.

Inside, a tall human dressed like a nobleman notices Broccoli’s request to join and approaches before the staff can finish verifying whether anyone is available to assist her. He examines the seal on Leonard Chand’nuit’s letter and confirms that it is unbroken and comes from one of the guild’s senior members. Broccoli explains that she met Leonard in the Darkwoods, turning an encounter outside the institution into the credential that opens its institutional interior. The letter does not merely prove that she has made contact with an established adventurer; it gives the guild a reason to treat her as a serious applicant before she has completed its usual process.

The recruiter’s response is immediately practical. He tells Broccoli that the guild does not admit everyone and normally gives new members rapid training with veterans before sending them on simple, low-risk missions. His difficulty is an odd number of applicants: a new noble member is waiting, but there is no talented recruit available to accompany her. Broccoli’s arrival solves that administrative imbalance. Her admission is thus both recognition and convenience. The guild sees promise in her, but it also needs a person who can make its preferred pairing system work.

Contract, Badge, and Expedition

The guild’s reading of Broccoli’s application produces an offer rather than an unconditional welcome. The recruiter suggests that she may fit in well and says that after her first expedition he might place her on a team better able to use her skills. The contract marks her as a temporary member for one month or until specified requirements are fulfilled. It also defines protections and material benefits, including discounts at certain other guilds, reduced travel costs, and possible reimbursement for food and special equipment.

Broccoli reads the contract closely instead of accepting its institutional language passively. She notices that the admission fee may not fairly cover a year whose opening portion has already passed and asks whether the fee should be reduced accordingly. More importantly, she identifies the clauses that preserve her freedom: nothing prevents her from quitting if she chooses, and a grace period allows her to delay the admission payment. Her final decision is deferred until after the first mission. Signing therefore does not erase her independence; it creates a limited trial in which both Broccoli and the guild will evaluate the arrangement.

She writes “Broccoli Bunch” on the document in large letters, completing the formal act of entry. The recruiter then explains that most guild members wear a bandoleer as a tradition, while pins and medals indicate rank and accomplishments. Because Broccoli already has suitable equipment, she receives the guild’s badge rather than being remade in the institution’s standard image. She pins it over her heart and rubs Orange’s sleeping head, joining bureaucratic affiliation to the personal companionship she carried into the guild.

The timetable is deliberately abrupt. Broccoli is instructed to report to the lobby the next day, two hours before noon, carrying everything required for a week-long voyage. Her surprise at the immediate departure is answered with the maxim that opportunity waits for no one. The next morning’s expedition is identified in the Exploration Guild Official Expedition Summary as Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC from the Port-Royal Branch, whose mission is to explore, scout, and map the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to the meeting point. Her first guild membership is consequently inseparable from her first organized field assignment.

Institutional Promise and Exclusion

Broccoli leaves the guild house expecting to meet her partner and begin a grand adventure, imagining that the expedition will offer repeated opportunities to make the new companion her best friend. This expectation gives the admission an emotional dimension absent from the contract. The guild is not only a source of legal protections, transport arrangements, equipment costs, and missions; it appears to promise a social structure in which adventure can produce durable companionship.

That promise is later withdrawn. After the expedition, the guild’s authority orders Gabriel to give Broccoli standard mission pay and show her out. When Broccoli asks whether the problem is her unpaid admission fee, she recalls that Mister Rainnewt had said payment could wait until her return. The response rejects that explanation: she is being removed because she is a liability and, in the official judgment now being applied to her, should never have been allowed to join.

The reversal exposes the conditional basis of the original welcome. Broccoli entered because a recommendation, an institutional shortage, and an urgent pairing requirement aligned. She is expelled when the guild’s assessment of risk outweighs those advantages. The fee, badge, contract, and promised team placement had made membership look stable, but the later dismissal reveals that her status was provisional in a deeper sense than the paperwork alone suggested.

Broccoli’s Path Into Institutional Adventure

The guild episode also belongs to a larger pattern in Broccoli’s development. Earlier, a translucent quest box had called upon her to save the world from a great evil; she initially treated the impossible-looking request as unreal. A Special Action performed in line with her Cinnamon Bun class then unlocked the Cleaning skill, and her practical willingness to clean became mechanically recognized. Later system notices rewarded her for defeating three level-one Sentinel Ghosts above her level, recorded the discovery of the Evil Root, announced quest completion with the statement that the world thanked her for her sacrifice, and unlocked the general skill Friendmaking after she repeated social actions often enough.

These episodes clarify why the Exploration Guild is such a consequential threshold. Broccoli has already been recruited by quests, classes, skills, and rewards, but those systems operate through impersonal prompts and feedback. The guild translates that same adventure logic into human procedures: recommendation letters, training expectations, paired deployments, registration forms, contracts, badges, mission pay, and removal. Her unusual progress is no longer merely something a menu can announce; it must be judged by an organization with its own standards of talent, usefulness, and liability.

Her joining is therefore neither a simple triumph nor a complete failure. It grants her a recognized place, material protections, a first partner, and access to Expedition No. 124, while also teaching her that institutional belonging can depend on circumstances beyond her control. The moment she pins the badge over her heart, the guild appears to be a doorway into shared adventure. The later order to show her out turns that doorway into a test of whether recognition, paperwork, and personal hope can survive an institution’s changing assessment of the person it admitted.
